h,l j ‘ t { v WTC presently has six H;: râ€"Tru courts on the parkâ€" side of the clubhouse, two hard courts adjacent to Seaâ€" gram Stadium and two twoâ€" court bubbles for winter play. One of the major chang? to take place this year will be the resurfacing of the back courts. The new Dynaâ€" cushion will be a rubberized, highlyâ€"textured _ surface which plays fatrly slow. Recently the club hired bidely-recognized profesâ€" sionals John and Harry Greenan for the period of May 1 to Sept. 15. John will take care of the daily needs of the club while Harry will look after private instrucâ€" tion in the capacity of head professional. He presently holds a similar position with Oxford Racquet club in Cambridge and operates a sports store with his brother. ‘‘*Harry has a great deal of experience as a player and a teacher,"‘* said Pezzack. "I‘m sure he‘ll bring some exciting new ideas to the club." Greenan replaces Sandy Morgan, who left WTC to go to the new Northfield faciâ€" lity, only to leave there soon after to take a position at the exclusive Badminton and Racquet club in Toronâ€" Included in WTC plans this year is the continuation of the Western Ontario open on the Civic Holiday weeâ€" kend and the CHYM Radioâ€" sponsored Western Region Munior tournament. Â¥ For the past few years the Waterloo club has been noâ€" torious for its long waiting list for potential members, but Pezzack indicated that is no longer a problem. ® 6 HARTRU COURTS (CLAY) ® 4 DYNAâ€"CUSHION L s ® ALL COURTS LIGHTED ij‘:‘ ® PRACTICE WALL //‘{4â€?‘ e LICENSED BAR LOUNGE {ay "Â¥A e CHANGING ROOMsS y e @ SNACK BAR / â€"#.] e PRO SHOP â€" STRINGING g‘[ï¬ e WATERLOO PARK SETTING e 2 EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS John and Harry Greenan Offer Private, Group and Clinic Instruction. Hoâ€" wever, Pezzack sees neither as a "threat‘‘ to the ewistenâ€" ce of WTC. ‘‘*Northfield is planning outdoor courts but it is siâ€" tuated in a highlyâ€"indusâ€" trialized area while we‘re (WTC) more aesthetically pleasing. | ‘‘Chicopee is an equally attractive facility but it is in its first year and must do a lot of organizing to establish a tradition â€" which in our case is a major drawing facâ€" tor. The only members we lose to that club will probaâ€" bly switch to be closer to home. ‘"‘They (Northfield) have a cp quality winter facility, and a number of our members have gone over, but plan to come back here in the summer. I‘m a member at Northfield myâ€" self and have a good feeling for the facility with its atâ€" tractive and diversified naâ€" ture. But I don‘t think many members will want to pay court time in the summer, so they‘ll come back here."‘ ‘‘Waterloo Tennis Club is a nonâ€"profit organization owned and run by its/memâ€" bership, while Northfield is a business operation. That can have a deepâ€"running efâ€" fect and alter people‘s attiâ€" tudes and expectations of the club." Pezzack also pointed out a major difference in the two Waterloo clubs. ® Because funding for seâ€" veral of WTC‘s courts came ircm the University of Waâ€" terloo government and Winâ€" tario, the club has a someâ€" what complex schedule. ‘‘We had to prove that the facilities would be cooperaâ€" tively shared by the club, university, _ and _ comâ€" munity,"‘ said Pezzack. As a result WTC provides reasonable access for payâ€" asâ€"youâ€"play players at $10 a court hour in the winter; Old age, young ideas Box 241. The club is known for its quaint clubhouse (above) and its aesthetic value among the trees of Waterioo Park. â€" . members, whose fees cover the entire year, pay $6 a court hour while UW stuâ€" dents pay for court use through university athletic Members have access to all courts in the summer at no additional cost, and share the back courts on a roughly 50/50 ratio with the univerâ€" sity. There is also a summer guest fee arrangement. In March the new execuâ€" tive was selected with Jim Evans succeeding Pezzack as president. Joy Baxter is first viceâ€"president and seâ€" cretary, Waiter Hundt is seâ€" cond vice, and Bob Trotter treasurer. Other executive members with various reâ€" sponsibilities are Christel Weber, Marten Johnston, Janet Morris, Ralph Staal and Dianne Meacher. **We have a variety of proâ€" grams for beginners, interâ€" mediates and advanced players plus private and group instructional clinics. We‘re also planning to put some added direction and instruction into our junior program,"‘ said Pezzack. Obviously, in slight conâ€" tradiction to that hackneyed phrase, the Waterloo Tennis Club is getting older. But yes, it‘s also getting better.
