They made their feelings known yesterday by presenting U of W president, Dr: Burt Matthews, with a petition protesting the elimination of the intramural music proâ€" gram at the university. V.O.N. have exceptionally busy year _ _J.P. Black, a Phd. student in computer sceience at the The Waterloo County Branch of the Victoria Order of Nurses had a busy 1978. At the organizations tenth annual meeting, held on March 1 in Cambridge, district director Dona Nash reported that her nurses made 22,552 visits and these were made to 1400 patients. This represents. a 3.5 per cent increase in visits and a six per cent increase in the number of patients. Guest speakers for the evening were Dr. Charles Pierce, executive director of the District Health Counâ€" cil and Douglas Jackson, exâ€" ecutive director of the Comâ€" munity and Social Resourâ€" ces Council. Mr. Pierce and Mr. Jackson spoke on the role of these councils in the community and the relaâ€" tionship of the V.O.N. to each. North and South Waterloo branches integrated to beâ€" come the Waterloo County Branch. Over the years there has been a noticeable decline in the need for night service. This has been attributed to the availability of oral mediâ€" cations for pain and the sucâ€" cessful teaching of family members to give interâ€" muscular injections. At the same meeting the following slate of officers was presented by Dr. R.M. Kilborn and approved. Ofâ€" ficers for ‘79 include Mrs. S$.0. Casey, president; W.R. Mr. Black didn‘t originate the petition, but he‘s been involved with it from the early stages. ‘‘We‘re not protesting whether or not Mr. Kunz (music director) goes, but that the entire program is being cut,"‘ Mr. Black said in an interview Monday. With the elimination of the program, Mr. Kunz will be out of a job. ‘*The concept here is to let people know that there is a large group who care about the music program,"‘ Mr. Kunz said. Aecording to Mr. Black, the problem is that the uniâ€" versity doesn‘t see how the music program is justified, ‘‘in dollars and cents‘‘. What the university adâ€" ministration is missing, he claims, is that the program has ‘"‘intrinsic‘‘ value to the students and the comâ€" munity _ (Waterloo and area.) Mr. Black and his wife beâ€" came involved in the music program when they first moved to Waterloo. They were looking for a way to ‘"meet some new friends," so they joined the concert choir, under the direction of Mr. Kunz. ‘*The university isn‘t payâ€" ing enough attention to thingithat can‘t be justified in a monetary sense," Mr. Black said. He and his wife found their involvement in the choir valuable, and he‘s afraid such things will be lost if the university contiâ€" nues cutting programs that Financial support for the conference came from UW, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Honeywell Inforâ€" mation Systems Canada and (near King N. opp. Zellers) Close to 500 statisticians and computer scientists inâ€" vaded the University of Waâ€" terloo campus on May 10 and 11 to take part in a staâ€" tisticsâ€"computer â€" conferenâ€" ce. They f some cutbacks in the p gram and other areas wou suffice. ‘ And Mr. Black doesn‘t feel the university is jusâ€" tified in cutting the program when ‘‘so much money is spent in other areas". _ University of Waterloo president, Dr. Burt Matthâ€" ews, isn‘t happy about cutâ€" ting the music program either, but he explained that the university administraâ€" tion had no choice in the matter. That program isn‘t the only one being cut, accordâ€" ing to Dr. Matthews. A number of faculty positions are being eliminated, and cutbacks will take place j intramural athletics a‘ drama.
