An allâ€"star game pitting the OUAA East against the West will 5 held at Laurier on March 24. â€" Smith was dismayed that Fitzgeraldâ€" was overlooked for both the first and second team allâ€"star selections. Koepke made the first team as did three Warriors; Vance, Graham and Seyâ€" mour Hadwen. ‘‘Both teams presszed. some in the second half and turnovers definitely killed us,‘‘ said Smith. One of those will be Ron Wettlaufer‘s. ~ At one time or another, Wettlaufer has been inâ€" ‘ volved in almost every phase of the organization and plans to coach tykes again ‘a'yw, after convening the tyke house league for of the last 10 years. Aside from playing ball himself ‘"a long time ago‘"‘ in Waterloo, Wettlaufer got involved as a volunteer when his sen David competed at the tyke level about 10 years ago. . Don‘t you think it‘s about time you chipped in and helped the kids? Your only donation need be your time. Registration on March 3 is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adult Recreation Centre, and at Moses Springer and Albert McCormick arenas. On March 10, a carâ€" ryover registration will be held at the Adult Rec Cenâ€" tre only from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wettlaufer said the sole purpose of the WMBA is to provide a sport outlet for as many youngsters in this city as possible. _ All volunteers will be able to sign up on lists at that time and will be contacted shortly thereafter. **Just take the midget team for example,"‘ said Wettlaufer. ‘*The coaches don‘t have kids on the team yet they come out year after year out of sheer dedicaâ€" tion.." _ . **And now that the Blue Jays are only 60 miles away we‘d like to see more Canadians, and especially Waâ€" terloo boys make a stab at the major leagues."‘ he €28 2 In fact, a major reason for the success of the orâ€" ganization has been the tireless work of the volunâ€" teers. In the past five years, the tykes, peewees and midgets have all won OBA titles. : Volunteers are needed in all phases of the game; and at â€"all age groups for different reasons. Younger divisions need parents because of shéer numbers while interest tends to trail off at the midget level, making volunteers even more significant. **Soccer has made some inroads, but we‘ve grown to some extent too. For example, tâ€"ball has grown from 12â€"18 teams and tyke from 8â€"14. Tâ€"ball has been very important to our program because it‘s given young kids a couple of extra years in the sport." Volunteers like Wettlaufer are much sought after, not only because of their dedication, but because the experience they pass on is invaluable. **Without umpires we need well over 200 volunteers. There‘s always some turnover but we have a hard core that stays on every year to keep the organization going. The executive (15â€"20) isa‘t that large but most of the guys on it have been there for a long time. They‘re awful hard to replace.""‘ ~> As far as the popularity of the game is concerned, Wettlaufer said that registration is on the upswing, especially at the younger levels. Still, as immediate past president, he is itching to get back into coaching as he says he relates well to the younger kids, be it on the baseball diamond or hockey **I took Dave to‘all his games, and one of the coaches got deeply involved in business and had to quit. The other coach saw that I was coming out to all the games and asked if I‘d pitch in and help, so I did." Over the years Wettlaufer has.coached tyke allâ€" star, peeâ€"wee allâ€"stars to the Ontario title, has been treasurer and president of the association, and is comâ€" ing up for his thirdâ€"year on the Interâ€"County execuâ€" tive. »~ help???
