One. of the main reasons why Waterloo Siskins went down four games straight to Stratford Cullitons was the play of Culliton goalie Rick Petrie. Here he shows excellent style in foiling Dana Saunders (8) from close in during The Stratford club would be well advised to open a branch effice of Xerox Ltd. in the Festival City. Their wins have come in uncanny carbon copy fashion. f By Rick Campbell There is no shame is losing, only in not trying your best. Waterloo Siskins are guilty of the former, but certainly not the latter as they bowed out of the Midwestern Junior B semiâ€"finals in four straight games to Stratford Cullitons. In every game of the series Waterloo has been ahead or close to the lead after two periods but Cullitons have pulled away in the third with superior skating and a deadly offense. Page 10 â€" Waterioo Chroni¢te, Wednesday, February 28, 1979 _ > Cullitons drove the last nail into Siskins coffin Friday in Waterloo when they scored an impressive 8â€"3 victory. Friday Waterloo held a 1â€"0 lead after one period, as they did in game two in Waterloo, only to see the visitors forge ahead 4â€"2 after two. Cullitons they pressed for four straight goals in the third before Jeff Bender closed out the scoring in the final minute of play. Other Waterloo goals went to captain Dale Wilson and Dana Saunders. Ken Chisholm with two, Terry Manning, Scott Skinner, Dave Petronski, Paul Barton, Max Maschke and Doug Kerr had Stratford goals. ‘*We worked hard but foolish penalities cost us,"" said Waâ€" terloo coach Jack Egers. "Stratford is just too good, they don‘t have any weaknesses. Elmira will be lucky to win a game from them." _ ‘"Cullitons have no individuals, every player is part of a team effort. Their plays are bangâ€"bangâ€"bang.~ Siskins went with four lines most of the game to keep pace with the Stratford skaters, but fell obviously behind in the third period to the wellâ€"conditioned Cullitons. ‘‘*They skate so well and are so strong,"‘ said Egers. ‘*When we‘d get the puck in front of their net, it seemed they could always lift our sticks and take the puck away. That End of line for underdog Siskins hurt our chances." Egers said that considering his club had only four returâ€" nees, none real goalscorers, from last season, that it did well to finish third as Elmira and Stratford each had 10â€"11 returnees. ‘‘Finishing as high as third was the highlight of the seaâ€" son. Sure I‘m disappointed we couldn‘t win a game in the playoffs, but I‘ll tell you, this team has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of."‘ Siskins Stats ‘‘*At the end of the second period our guys were a little frustrated by their goaltending. But Dave (Barrett) made some great saves for us too, he just seemed to be overpoâ€" wered in the third." * Siskins luck was not enhanced by the fact that Stratford goalie Rick Petrie was hot as pistols for the umpteenth game in a row.
