You‘d have to be INSANE to think that Waterloo Siskins have a good chance of beating Stratford Cullitons in the upâ€" coming Midwestern Ontario Junior B semiâ€"finals. . Cullitons are twoâ€"time allâ€"Ontario champions. They have run away and hid with the league championship again this ear, losing only four times alons the way. !Several Stratford players should be playing Major A hockâ€" y but have opted to remain at home and protect their colâ€" lege scholarship interests. Cullitons have one of the league‘s premier netminders in Terry Wickham, have a solid defense and offensive fire power that has netted them 87 goals more than their nearest Midâ€"western rival. An average of two goals a game more. _ Looking at the opposing Siskins, it has not been a banner year for them. There have been several player changeovers and a dreadful slump had to be endured just before Christâ€" mas. _ Waterloo has only the fourth best goaltending average in the league and both Dave Barrett and Ed Takamatsu have had their suspicious moments. |______________ * â€" _ Defence is a strong point for Siskins, but the forward lines for the most part have been varied and inconsistent. Jeff Bender of Waterloo Siskins is awarded the Most Gentlemanly Player trophy at the Midwesâ€" Lern Ontario Junior B bangquet Monday in New amburg. The Cullitons are not infallible. Their defence, as proven in the second period of Feb. 2‘s game against Waterioo is not impregnable as Siskins scored five times. And Wickham Lfn goal is not strangely, only as good as the defence in front him. & It is interesting to note that of Stratford‘s four losses this year, two have come at the hands of New Hamburg Hahns, a good team early in the year but slump artists lately. One came against Owen Sound, decisively in Stratford, and Kings didn‘t even make the playoffs. And the other came two weeks ago, again in Stratford, against, oh my. the Waâ€" terloo Siskins. ' Looking at that game, it was a turning point in the season for Takamatsu, who excelled in the first period to hold Stratford scoreless. â€" _ Siskins jumped into a 5â€"2 secondâ€"period lead and increased it to 6â€"2 before Stratford came storming back with three of their own. 2 Despite that turn of events, Siskins rebounded and outhusâ€" tled the home squad for the last five minutes. Not at all the Alf Payne takes over By Rick Campbell Waterloo Tigers will have a reluctant but enthusiastic field manager for 1979. Alfie Payne will replace Gary Jeffries in that posiâ€" tion. Jeffries stepped down after a tremendous 1978 campaign citing other sports activity commitâ€" ments and family as his reaâ€" sons for leaving. ‘‘That‘s the only way Alfie said he would take the job, if Jeff couldn‘t do it again. He said it was Jeff over him for sure if he wanted the job," said Tiger generalâ€"manager Merle (Charop) Glassford. ‘‘Alfie was originally going to take the junior Expos, but when Jeff stepped down, Alf said how ‘bout me?" Glassford said Payne will continue to carry on ""what Jeff started." Under Jeffries the firstâ€" year team had an 18â€"18 reâ€" cord and narrowly missed the playoffs after losing to St. Thomas in a suddenâ€" death game. = The 32â€"yearâ€"old Payne is a native of Toronto and was a former pro with the New York Mets organization. Adding fuel to Waterloo‘s fire is the fact that they have won eight of their last nine games, and everyone on the team is playing a superb brand of hockey. ‘"Let‘s face it, we‘re playing the Ontario champions,"" said Siskin coach Jack Egers. "In order to beat them we‘ll have to be at our best for 60 minutes of every game. > "We‘ll have to watch our penalties and capitalize on every chance we get." 60 I agree. Maybe none of you out there think Waterloo has much of a chance. But me? Egers said it will be good to be underdogs in the series, that it is a nice role to be in. "Last year against Hespeler we were the favorite and they pushed us to the limit. We‘d like to do the same. "I know all our kids will be up for Stratford.
