By Rick Campbel! f Chronicle Staff Writer In Las Vegas or Monte Carlo, it‘s double your money and double your fun.. Wel, let‘s change that a bit. At the Kitchener Aud Saturday afternoon, Daryl Benâ€" jamin doubled his season goal output in the final two minuâ€" tes against Guelph Gryphons. Which meant double the fun for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, who came back in eftfhiyâ€"gramatic fashion to defeat Gryphs 6â€"5. The victory moved Hawks into a firstâ€"place tie with Guelph and the idle Western Mustangs. Laurier is 7â€"4â€"2, Mustangs are 6â€"3â€"4 and Guelph still sits in the drivers seat with two games in hand at 7â€"2â€"2. Guelph had taken a 5â€"4 lead at the eightâ€"minute mark of the final period on a goal by Hugh Mitchell and appeared well on their way to victory as Hawks suffered a temporary letdown. But the pesky home side fought back in the late going and Benjamin tied it up when for some reason Guelph left him alone in the slot at the 18â€"minute mark. Leftâ€"winger Greg Ahbe fed him perfectly and the former Kingston Canadian drilled a shot past Dave Gingrich in the Guelph net. Then with only 28 seconds remaining the same combinaâ€" tion clicked again as Ahbe, who had broken his stick on the play, kicked the puck out from the side of the net to Benâ€" jamin, who wasted no time in converting. _ The 'goals doubled Benjamin‘s season output from two to four. His last tally came way back on Dec. 7. ironically against the same Gryphons in _(_‘.uelph. *‘*We had our chances to pull away all game," said the rangy Benjamin. "*And we kept working because all we could think of was how they had beaten us twice by one goal. For a while there we were just getting outlucked but we finally broke through. Benjamin‘s line, with Ahbe on the left side and right winger Dan McCafferty, was newlyâ€"formed last Thursday against Western. They played superlatively as a unit Saturâ€" day. with McCafferty scoring twice and adding two asjsts and Ahbe scoring once (shorthanded) in addition to adding assists on both of Benjamin‘s goals. Benjamin also had two assists. Mike Collins scored Laurier‘s other goal. ~On my first goarhe (Gingrich) couldn‘t see anything and on the second Yap (Ahbe) passed it right back to me. Sure felt good to score again.‘" . â€" Page 10 â€" Waterioo Chronicle, Wednesday, January 31, 1979 Ahbe‘s goal was one of the most spectacular in years at the Auditorium and brought many of the fans to their feet. After batting the puck to center while teamâ€"mate Paul McSorley was serving a fiveâ€"minute highsticking penalty. Ahbe beat a Guelph player to the puck and chased it into the Gryphon end. At about the faceâ€"off hash marks he made a sharp cut to the net and with defenceman Doug Heslip crawling all over his back Ahbe reached out with one hand on his stick and shovelled the puck under Gingrich to tie the game 3â€"3. ®* That goal definitely gave Hawks a lift as they killed off the remaining three minutes of McSorley‘s penalty expertâ€" ly. But soon after. John Sikura took the wind out of Laurier‘s sails by tipping in Tim Hurl‘s pass to give the visitors a 3â€"3 tie entering the third. That tie was shortlived as McCafferty broke free on the right side and smoked his second goal along the ice to Ginâ€" grich‘s stick side. But Mike Pidgeon. who joined Gryphons at Christmas from the Pacific Coast League, scored his second two minutes later and then came Mitchell‘s goâ€" ahead goal. "It‘s a mental thing. all year when we‘ve fallen behind we‘ve never really recovered." said Laurier coach Wayne Gowing. "Then today we come back like gangbusters and Benjy doubles his season output. It just seems when we fall behind. we sag. but when we get a goal back. there‘s a total resurgence throughout the whole team. "G;elph is a stFong team and their goal right at the end of the first period (19:31) really gave them a lift. I knew right then we were in for a tough game. â€" ‘‘YÂ¥es. if we‘d won this game it would have been the clincher. we‘d have finished first." said a disappointed Guelph coach Bud Folusewych. ~Now every game is criâ€" tical. the league is so close. Heck, we could still finish last. Gryphons are a vastly ir;\pr'oved team over a year ago and will be hard to dislodge from top spot. â€" ‘‘Today we. simply beat ourselves. You can‘t make misâ€" takes like we did late in the game â€" especially against a good team like Laurier.~ Notes: The refereeing of Guelph‘s Bill Divorski was atroâ€" cious as he continues to showboat and treat adults like preâ€" school children. Too bad. too. it took away from some spiritâ€" ed action in the first two periods. Folusewych said his team got what it deserved. but defenceman Brad Pirie was vocalâ€" ly in obvious disagreement.. Gowing and assistant Laurier coach John Baker were flabbergasted by several calls._ Hawks can clinch a playoff berth with a win over Waâ€" terloo at the Aud tomorrow. Game time is 8 p m Gutsy Hawks grab share of first WLU: they shoot horses By Rick Campbell Chronicle Staff Writer In sports the word dribble is usually associated with basketball. .Don‘t tell Greg Ahbe that. Last Thursday night at the Aud the Laurier left winger negotiated a sixâ€"mileâ€"perâ€" hour shot in the opening minute of the second period that _ eluded _ Western Mustang goalie Fred Cuveâ€" lier to tie 2â€"2. It was a key, if fluke, goal at the time, but Ahbe came back two minuâ€" tes into the third to score on a beautiful solo effort to "redeem" himself. That second goal proved to be the winner as Hawks went on to record a 5â€"3 triumph before their larâ€" gest, most vocal regular season crowd in years (350). "I got the pass on the foreâ€" hand but the puck slid beâ€" tween my feet," said Ahbe of his blistering second period marker. "I just twisted my body and sort of shovelled it in.~ Laurier Captain Tom Butt (10) wards off Gueliph forward Scott McKenzie (8) as Golden Hawk Pete Lochead (17) helps cover up in the crease. Hawks scored two late goals to win 6â€"5. Western had taken a 2â€"1 first period lead on goals by Bill Smith and, Kevin Shotâ€" bolt while Paul McSorley blazed a shot from the point for the opening Laurier goal. Ahbe and Pete Lochead on a double deflection gave Hawks a 3â€"2 lead entering the third, and when Ahbe made it 4â€"2 Hawks appeared in command. ‘‘Whenever we get up two goals our guys for some reaâ€" son subconsciously lay back,"" said Hawk coach Wayne Gowing. ‘"The opâ€" position has nothing to lose, and usually fights back to make it close."‘ However, Dave Duff scored on a neat twoâ€"way passing play with Ron Graham and Jamie Conroy and at that point (10:54) Mustangs mounted a heated attack. But referee Henry Reynen stalled Western‘s comeback attempt at 15 28 when he fingered Mustang John Walker to the penalty box. Fortyâ€"four seconds later Mike Collins centered a ï¬ss to Laurier captain Tom Butt all alone in front of Cuvelier and the slick centre wasted no time in bangingeit home for the gameâ€"clincher. ‘*We haven‘t had a lot on the powerplay, we‘ve been trying different things lateâ€" ly," said Gowing. "It worked at the right time tonight though .‘ The loss marred an outâ€" standing performance by the Maritimer Cuvelier in goal for Western. On one poâ€" werplay in the first period he stopped five shots in a row from all angles. At the other end Al Macâ€" Sorley appeared shaky on the first Western goal but seitled down, especially in the third to make outstandâ€" ing saves for Hawks. ‘‘That penalty (Walker‘s) was the ball game."" said Western coach Ron Watson ‘‘The loss really makes it tough for us in our division."‘ Our young guys need a model and (Bill) Smith‘s line got it going for us in the thirdâ€"until the penality. ‘‘*But what irks me is that we‘re playing in midâ€" November form. We went tver a month without a game and I‘don‘t think we‘re Noetes: Mark HolbrooW and newcomer Bob Schnurr along with left winger Dave Northern are providing Hawks with a tenacious crechecking unit...
