Regional council did not take any action on the Waterloo proposal. Next year the Region will main- tain its special committee investigating potential re- gional headquarter sites. The club also donated its Elaine McLean bursary towards the purchase of a kidney dialysis machine for K-W Hospital at Its November meeting. "There is lots of land in North Waterloo and we would be willing to help them relocate." said Mr. Voelker. "We just hope the industries will want a new modern location like we want a location for region- al government." At the Dec. 6 meeting of the K-W Opti-Mrs Club. members donated $100 to the Sunbeam Home for Christ- mas gifts and agreed to de- llvor fruit baskets to Sun- nyside Home residents. Opti-M rs. donates $100 Mr. Voelker would like to see the industries pres- ently occupying the area. moved to Waterloo's indus- trial basin in the north end of the city. "The land at the K-Mart site might be cheaper but it is not serviced," said Mr. Voelker. "This area is totally serviced." Mayor Epp and Mr. Voelker made it clear that this is just a proposal and no concrete plans have been made. The plans have not been discussed with the owners of the industries. Both Mayor Epp and Mr. Voelker feel the plan has distinct ad- vantages over the suggest- ed K-Mart site. Geograph- ically the Waterloo site is in the centre of the Region, development of this land would help revitalize the downtown area and the development would link Waterloo Park and Cen- tennial Park. Leftover land could be used for Senior citizen housing and high rise development. This decision was made after Waterloo Mayor Herb Epp presented an alternative plan suggesting a downtown Waterloo lo- cation for the headquarters. For the past few months he and Alderman Charles Voelker have been congid- ering and researching the possibility of constructing the headquarters on a site in downtown Waterloo. The suggested site overlooks Waterloo Park and is bounded by Caroline Street and the back of Westmount Place Shopping Centre. It takes in 24.71 acres pres- ently owned by *CanBar Products limited 6.98 acres owned by the Lazy Boy Company and 3.21 acres owned by the Grand River Railway. The land behind these industries is occu- pied by railway freight sheds, warehouses and vacant land. - Ig-Mart aumamamaazgwa’é? 55:25:35 alestA/ffaees,,/u,, HE agisinst the plan. down 'me proposal to re; locate regional headquar- ters at the K-Mart Plaza site on Highway 8 in Kit- chener.
