Pantbmime's origins In 1855. Benjamin Webster pro- duced a pantomime billed as a "grand coalition of burlesque and comic pantomime for young and old." From here grew the tradition of cast- ing the main parts with a woman taking the role of the Principal Boy and a man taking the part of the fe- male character or Pantomime Dame. Dance and song too were very much a part of pantomime at this stage, as were spectacular scenery and cos- turning. It was Tom Matthews, a pu- pil of Grimaldi, who eventually changed the clown costume from the traditional Harlequin with diamond- patterned jester suit to the frilly version we're familiar with today. The Victorian era ushered in the many changes that made English pan- tomime what it is today. Queen Vic- toria. with her large family, brought "family life" into vogue. Pantomime responded with a more romantic version designed exclusively for children. At the same time. more sophisticated writers were pr'oducing burlesques or extravaganzas with modern interpretations, and actresses were appearing in the parts of boys, men in the ladies' parts.
