ONTARIO some explaining to do "First of all, art is an expression - a reflection. My art is how I reflect on everything. Art has to be human so it can't be mech- anical or commercial - but it must be perfect if it's going to say what it's supposed to." But that doesin't mean that art can't be made to be a commercial product. John feels pot hangers are a good example of practical art. They combine all the aspects of creating a well sculptured design with a practical use. ' And of course, John says you must use your hands which rules out mechanics. The same ethics apply to Dawn's weaving. First she buys freshly “sheared sheep's wool from a nearby farmer. Then she sep- arates the lumps of matted material twisting it into fluffy balls. The balls are raw material for the spin- ning wheel which yields fine or coarse thread. de- pending on how it's oper- Now the wool is ready to be weaved. Dawn weaves with an old style' shuttle operated by hand. The shut- tle carries the weft thread which weaves among the warp threads to form cloth. In the more automated systems, the hand shuttle is replaced by a "flying shuttle which moves along a tract without hands. “I never would use a fly- ing shuttle. It's just too mechanical. You could whip up a blanket in a day," says Dawn. By using a hand shuttle, Dawn might weave slower but each thread is guided by hand creating a more unique pattern. .
