Citizens of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo are being invited to help the municipality and the Onâ€" tario Ministry of the Enâ€" vironment plan the future handling, reclamation and disposal of more than a million tons of garbage produced every year in the region. The Ministry of the Enâ€" vironment has recently beâ€" gan a $60,000 study to imâ€" prove waste management and examine the feasibility of building a processing plant to recover energy and reusable materials from solid waste. The study. which is to be completed in December, will cover capiâ€" tal and operating costs, location, and the possible markets for the energy and reusable _ materials reâ€" covered from the garbage. *"The study will look into the volume and type of waste in the area to see whether it is suitable for energy â€" recovery," â€" said regional waste management engineer Gerald H. Thompâ€" son. Region begins study to solve waste problem Page 26 â€" Waterloo Chronicle, Wednesday, July 14, 1976 Last year. 1.080,000 tons of waste were produced in the Waterloo Region. The program for resource reâ€" covery was adopted by Environment â€" Ontario in 1974 because of foreseeable problems caused by the inâ€" creasing amount of sold waste and the need for conâ€" servation of diminishing reâ€" sources. An experimental plant for resource recovery is now being built in the Toronto borough of North York. Its purpose is not to reduce the amount of garâ€" bage being generated in New sewer system plan for Region Developers _ considering the use of communal sewâ€" age treatment facilities to permit construction of resâ€" idential subdivisions â€" in areas not serviced by muniâ€" cipal _ sewage _ treatment plants might soon be reâ€" sponsible to both the Minisâ€" try of the Environment and the Waterloo Region. At present, some developâ€" ers have had to finance and design their own sewage treatment facilities and foot the operation bill. The deâ€" veloper is to operate the treatment system in accord with Ministry of the Envirâ€" onment standards. Only in the event of default would the Region be required to take over the operation, AVUVCTIONM â€" COMING UP... 4 Watch this space for 4 future announcements of auctions Rummelhart Auction Sales Co. 744â€"9679 578â€"0060 KEN GARVEY Licensed Auctioneer Over a million tons of refuse must be processed annually at the Kitchener dump. In the Linwood area of Wellesley Township where the proponent is considerâ€" ing the use of lagoons and spray irrigation, the Region will foot the bill. According _ to _ Gerald Thompson, the resource recovery study will include information about a proposâ€" ed resource recovery facilâ€" and the cost of such operâ€" ation In the New â€" Hamburg area of Wilmot Township a package sewage plant disâ€" charging to the Nith River is being considered. In the Linwood proposal, the properties would be for sale and the Region would be required to accept ownerâ€" ship and operating responâ€" sibilities from the beginâ€" ning. Under the present system. the Region would recover such costs by a direct charge back to the area municipality. . Regional news Cong Coomg ity to be built on the Erb St. Waterloo waste disposal site. The Ottawa St. site is slated to close in early 1977. ‘*After September 1, 1976, all be taken to the Erb St. Waterloo site. Construction waste will be taken to Otâ€" tawa St. until the end of the year. By 1977, we hope to have Ottawa St. completeâ€" ly finished. We will not be allowing any more waste ‘material into this site after that," said Mr.. Thompson. The Ottawa St. site will then receive a top coat of gravel and then be landsâ€" caped. Environment Ontario will be consulting the public as part of the environmental assessment of the plant or its alternatives. The waste processing plant to be studied for apâ€" plication to the region would greatly reduce the volume of garbage taken to the Erb St. Waterioo site. To process waste, the. plant would first grind and sepâ€" arate â€" solid _ substances. Combustible substances would be burned, reusable material recycled and nonâ€" usable material would be disposed of at the landfill site.
