_ Project HEAR brings friendship to seniors Page 16 â€" Waterloo Chronicle, Wednesday, July 14, 1976 By Mary Stupart An elderly man sits alone in his family home, friendless and lonely. His children live many miles away and he has no one to visit him regularly. Simple tasks like changing a light bulb or posting a letter are difficult chores for him, since he has no one to respond to his special needs. Laura Snyder of Waterloo believes this scenario is a familiar one for many senior citizens living in the older residential areas of the city. She believes there are many shutâ€"in and lonely senior citizens who could benefit from a friendly phone call each day or a visit from a warm, interested friend. . As coordinator of Project HEAR (Helping Erb Street Area Residents), Miss Snyder‘s task is to find these people and offer services such as reading, regular visits and inâ€" terested phone calls. _ *‘We réally want to stress the HEAR in our name. This is a program where I listen to people‘s needs and respond to them," she said. 20 â€" ‘Project HEAR began in February, 1976 as an outreach program of Erb Street Mennonite Church. Members of the congregation had been discussing the idea of a personal, visitation and outreach program to seniors and shutâ€"ins for three years. When Miss Snyder offered to begin the proâ€" gram, the church ‘enthusiastically gave its support and resources to the project. The program is not designed solely for senior citizens but Miss Snyder says the services offered ‘"probably appeal to them more than any other group". Project HEAR proâ€" vides personal services that aren‘t offered by existing social agencies and tries to get seniors interested in proâ€" grams and hobbies outside their homes. Regular phone calls to seniors to affirm their sense of being needed and cared for are also an important part of Project HEAR. ‘"The purpose of this program is to lessen feelings of loneliness through personal and phone conâ€" tacts to those who may wish such contacts, to affirm their sense of being needed and cared for and to build their conâ€" fidence that someone will be available to respond to an unforeseen need,"‘ said Miss Snyder. Project HEAR originally limited its area of service to the neighbourhood around Erb Street Mennonite Church, stretching west to Roslin St., east to Caroline St., south to Alexandra St. and north to Westmount St. However, Miss Snyder has responded to the needs of people living outside this area. _ Miss St;yder spends most of her time visiting seniors in their homes or in nursing L:omes but on occasion has been called upon to change a light bulb, read a book or write a letter v“‘tvl.‘it:eg;;-vll;;;i“fig about people outside the area who need help and I don‘t want to turn them down,"" she said. . idb idiiniasinndine on dsn n is Sodd ariccan ied Although Miss Snyder is confident that many people livâ€" ing in the church‘s neighbourhood could benefit from Project HEAR‘s services, she has found it difficult to conâ€" tact them. "It‘s really hard to find the people we‘re interested in because they‘re not involved in anything . . .People are realâ€" ly afraid to say that they want something or need help. They‘re unwilling to admit that they‘re lonely."‘ Miss Snyder presently visits or phones 20 people on a regular basis, some frequently and others infrequently.
