Historic Waterioo By Marg Rowell This building at the southâ€"east corner of King and Erb Sts. dates back to 1858. An 1861 Tremaine map has a drawing of it in the margin. It is referred to as the commercial buildâ€" ing. One of its occupants in 1861 from Erb St. on was W. Hespeler, a general grocer. This secâ€" tion was owned by Jacob Bricker, the proprietor of the Waterloo Foundry. . John McDougall was next to Hespeler. He was a dealer in shelf and heavy hardware. This secâ€" tion was owned by Moses Springer and Samuel Erb. 6 . Hoffman and Weaver had the next store. They were commission merchants and produce dealâ€" ers. John Shuh and Co. occupied the last store. Shuh was a general merchant and produce dealer. < The building is brick with fancy brickwork at the top. The front half is three stories high and the rear portion is only two stories. Iron tie bars can be seen on the Erb St. side. They stabilize the walls. The windows at the front have all been altered from the original except over Hahn‘s Drug Store. 2 â€" There are some apartments on the second floor. The third floor was the Masonic Hall at one time. . 20 All the stores have been modernized. However, some of the features of g):;g ago are still visible in the drug store. Therevis a figured tin ceiling with small pipes projecting from it where the old gas lights used to hang. Behind the dispensary are barkâ€"covered axeâ€"hewn beams. To the rear of this was the storage area for Seagram‘s liquor store which was next door. _ . The panelled wood below the display windows are seldom seen these days as is the tongue and groove wooden ceiling above the entrance. _ _ _ The drug store has an interesting history. The first prescription was filled there in 1863. A grant of $23,000 from the Petroleum _ Research Fund has been awarded to three â€" Czechoslovakiaâ€"born researchers, two of whom are at the University of Waterloo. The grant is to support theoretical research which promises to be of value in the field of organic chemistry. The three are: Dr. Joset Paldus and Dr. Jiri Cizek. both full professors with the department of applied mathâ€" ematics and the department of chemustry at UW. and Dr. Joset Michl. a full proâ€" fessor at the University of Utah. >\ All three worked together . prior to 1968, in Prague, and all are former students of Dr. Jaroslav.
