According to coâ€"ordi director of three of the four producti Armstrong, Summer Theatre is aime general public‘ as an alternative to t venience and high price of movies. ‘‘We‘re here because we feel the community deserves good theatre. Our problem with trying to create a Waterloo Theatre is that our only location is on the university campus,"" said Rick. And the Waterloo Summer Theatre is not a uniâ€" versity project, even though Rick is a third year drama student there. The Summer Theatre group started as a joke between Rick and the staff of the UW Arts Centre when it was realized that both the Humanities theatre and the Theatre of the Arts sat idle all summer. ‘‘*Even though the problem of being associated with the university is increased by using campus theatres, it would be foolish to let such good theatres go to waste for the summer. We feel the community needs quality theatre and we have organized a professional cast to bring it to them,"~ said Rick. * Rick felt the theatres could be put to a better use than storage for the summer and was encouraged to undertake a summer, professional theatre proâ€" duction to run in the theatres. Both theatres house professional programs in the form of operas. musical performances and drama during the winter months. The Waterloo Summer Theatre group would be an extension of that professional calibre. And when one considers that the â€"admission price is about the same as for a movie, summer theatre sounds like a good idea. x approach to theatre, the Waâ€" l1 present four light comedies . By presenting light comedies, Rick hopes to build a substantial following for the summer theatre productions. If the season goes well, the sumâ€" mer theatre will be run again next year. If that season is well received, Rick would consider continuing summer theatre on a permanent basis. ‘‘We hope to have covered comedy well this season and are looking forward to a long and happy liaison with the community," said Rick Armstrong. Of course, before one can predict the future, one must be certain of the present. Summer Theatre is something new. It will present quality productions in beautiful theatres at movieâ€"house prices. Inâ€" dividual ticket prices are $3.50 for adults and $2.50 for students and senior citizens. Season tickets reduce the price to $10 for all four producâ€" tions and $6 for students and seniors for the seaâ€" son. Tickets are available by calling 885â€"4280. They are also available at the UW Arts Centre Box Office, Modern Languages Building. The four plays slated for this year include What the Butler Saw, a fastâ€"paced farce about the situations of an unorthodox psychiatrist and his wife, playing from May 13â€" 16 and again May 20â€"23, in the Theatre of the Arts and A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, a comiic drama playing from June 10â€"13 and June 17â€"20 in the Theatre of the Arts.
