She also took a course in painting portraits~dnder the direction of "the late Tam Cayley, At the Doon School Of Fine Arts. When she had completed high school, Mrs. Zimmerâ€" man took a trip to the Southâ€" ern United States. While she was there, she became interested in oil painting. In laterâ€"years, she switched over to water colours. Toâ€" day she does both oil and water colours as well as pen and ink sketches and ceived, was a one dollar first place prize in 1928, from the Jolly Junior Sunâ€" She was 15â€"yearsâ€"old at the time and the cartoon picâ€" ture was printed in the papâ€" er. Sinceâ€"then she has won five or six awards and has entered many juried art shows. A newspaper clipping in her scrap book shows Mrs. Zimmerman in 1958, disâ€" playing herâ€" painting, enâ€" titled, The Village Blackâ€" smith in Bridgeport. This picture was displayed at the 75th annual spring exâ€" hibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. It was chosen from hundreds of paintings submitted from all over Canada. The mural is a colorful, hisâ€" torical display of the vilâ€" lage and is still in the hotel 99¢ iIdessa Zimmerman, a Kitchener artist, stands beside one of her favorite paintings which is on display at the Waterloo Public Library. She is a member of the Central Onâ€" tario Art Society as well as the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Art Society. Like Mrs. Zimmerman, Mrs. Harpe has been turnâ€" ing out pieces of art since she was a young girl She started out by producing silâ€" houettes which were made from black xâ€"ray paper and cut with embroidery scisâ€" sors. Some of these silhouâ€" ettes are displayed at the exhibition, some â€" are of flowers and weeds. Mrs. Harpe prefers to paint outdoor scenes where she uses water colours and J.M. Harper.a.c.. B.a.
