A quick and superficial glance at a painting does not alâ€" ways answer these questions for us. In all fairness to a work of art we ought to give it a chance by looking at it more than once. Since our feelings and moods change readily so might our reactions to a work of contemporary art. bearing in mind that the artist is also subject to the same emotions as we are. Then perhaps we can begin to look at art with a fresh approach. not insisting on the same old tired subject matâ€" ter time after time. Perhaps then we can take a new look at the world around us as well. This current exhibit, which contains over 180 works, is a pot pourri of the visual arts scene right now in Ontario, and gives us a chance to view at our leisure what contemporary artists are up to. If it is true that the show contains nothâ€" ing new (as many longâ€"standing art lovers observed at the opening Thursday night) then at least the lack of gimmickâ€" ry puts the show on the plus side, as does the technical competence and care with which the artists have worked. A riot of color awaits the viewer. in all possible form and variety. Some of the criteria to consider when forming an opinion on modern art are use of color, balance. line and form. How has the artist used his colors? Are the forms or shapes reâ€" lated to one another and to the total shape of the work? Has a sense of balance been maintained? Select groups invited to special seminar From Sorel Etrog‘s "Northeast", two giant screw eyes of bronze locked together and painted primary red and blue. to Gil Furoy‘s ~Presenting Gil Furoy®. an enorâ€" mous composite of personalities from his past in gaudy amusement parkâ€"type format, to Rose Lindzon‘s ~Apricot Ice", a ‘60‘s type colorâ€"field painting, color runs rampant. That itself is a contradiction in terms, for how can one have an opinion if one has nothing to base it on? Some of our children at this point could tell us more about modern art than we know, especially if they are among the forâ€" tunate ones who have either visited the Gallery in school groups, or have been visited in their classrooms in the last 3 years by members of the Gallery‘s visual awareness proâ€" gram.
