It first operated out of the building at King and Dupont Streets which was torn down in In June 1879, the Mutual Life purchased the lot at the‘ comner of Erb Street West and Albert for $775. They erected a building on the lot at a cost of $3,718 That illustrates just how active the two founders of the fire insurance company were in establishing Waâ€" terloo as an insurance centre. Cyrus M. Taylor and Moses Springer founded the Waterloo Mutal Fire Insurance Company in 1863, thus putting into operation the first insurance comâ€" pany in Waterloo. The work of the company at that time was being conducted out of the building on King Street now occupied by Murray‘s Studios. Then the situation begins to get a little complicated. The Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company then moved into the building at King and Dupont Street. They stayed there until 1968 when they moved into the Erb Street building where they still are today. _ In the meantime, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Springer kept busy starting insurance companies. They helped out in the founding of the Dominion Life Assurance Company in 1889. The new company was operating out of the same building as the Waterloo Mutual on King and Dupont but later bought the building on Erb Street in 19086 when the Mutual Life Assurance Company moved to their present King Street location. . The pillars on the building at 14 Erb Street West were added about 25 years ago and an addition to the rear half of the building was made shortly after Dominion Life had moved in. Extreme care was taken in coâ€"ordinating the second addition with that of the 1880 building so that today it is impossible to tell there was an addition at all.
