LAURIE‘S BEST | 5 _« â€" f I am a Waterloo patriot at heart Reunions being what they are, the conversation turned quickly to current lifestyles. First question was: ‘"Why on earth did you go back to Waterioo?"‘ I felt the hair on the back of my neck bristle. Jet lag has me under its spell. My husband and J just returned to Waterioo from a trip to Californiaâ€"the San Francisco Bay area to be precise. Since we lived in Berkeley as students for a few years, it was a chance to visit old friends. as one of total incredulity accompanied this one. ‘‘"Do you really actually like living there?" A look that can only be described Now this didn‘t come as an earth shattering revelaâ€" tion to us, since the accuâ€" mulated knowledge of most Californians on â€" subjects Canadian is that the cold winds come from here. They only know that because their Our â€" California â€" friends should have known better than to ask this. They disâ€" covered long ago that we are dedicated Waterloo‘ns. When we first moved to Waterloo five years ago, their inevitable question was: *‘‘"Waterloo? Where‘s that? Never heard of it!"‘ |&=| Ee |~&2| |&2| |&2| Fred has been in the car sales business from 1962 to 1969. Most recently Fred was a master franchiser for a Southern Ontario car rental company. A mere hour‘s drive will put you right in the heart of all that pollution, traffic and noise. But Toronto does have some cultural features that appeal every night on the tube. My response in those days was to sigh, induige in a long icy stare and deliver "my American geography. The lesson was punctuated freâ€" quently with references to things Canadian which should have been familiar: William _ Shatner, Lorne Greene, Seagram‘s, bacon, maple syrup, the telephone . . . cops, scratch that ... ... they thought a native disâ€" covered that one. ~ It‘s a city surrounded (and this for the ecology freaks) by rich farm land and gently rolling hills . . . it‘s also surrounded by Kitchener but we‘ll let that pass . . . Waterioo is a small city with a big heart (better to be a small city than a large town, I always say. Sounds much more cosmopolitan, don‘t you think? ) How would you describe Waterloo to the great unâ€" washed? My attempt went something like this: JAN BEECROFT NORM WAGNER Secretaryâ€"Treasurer General Manager Jan is one of Kitchenerâ€"Waterâ€" Norm is certainly no stranger in loo‘s first used car saleswomen. Waterloo has two univerâ€" sities and a community colâ€" legeâ€"remarkable for a city sometimes has the distinct fold, so would the city. After all, the students and faculty mean a great deal to the local merchants. You can tell because about this time each year all manner of â€" ‘‘Welcome _ Students® signs spring up in store winâ€" dows. As a student, I always felt it was nice to be wantâ€" edâ€"if only for your money. It beats Berkeley! There, it was a tossâ€"up as to whethâ€" er you‘d be tearâ€"gassed, wounded in a riot or simply mugged on the campus. these worthy institutions In keeping with the "hoâ€" mey*‘ feeling of the city, we have our own farmers® marâ€" ket. (Thank you, Kitchener city fathers and Oxleaâ€" without you, we never could have done it‘ ) Actually, I‘d say that the students have assimilated themselves very nicely into this â€" community. _ Where would our economy be without those Thursday night pub crawls? to Waterloo‘ns. For instance, it has several movie theaâ€" tres. We only have one and so these things are importâ€" This isn‘t to infer that Waâ€" BEECROFT MOTORS IS can flag. 1 say "tried"" beâ€" cause it didn‘t work out all that well You see, the flag was nonâ€"flammable and they didn‘t discover this unâ€" til the great moment of igâ€" nition. The demonstration was, to put it midly, a fizzle. Waterloo also has its arts, crafts and hobby spots. We have a Potters® Workshop, we have parks, civic groups, a striperama . . . well, until the fire ... The German influence is strong and so are the sauâ€" sages. We have an Oktoberfest celebration _ each _ year. Seems to me I‘ve heard that another city does that too . . . We do have the odd traffic jam and a slight bit of polluâ€" tion. But after all, how upset can you get because a horse and buggy is blocking trafâ€" fic? And pollution? Well, the brewery does smell bad, but perhaps it beats a ceâ€" ment factory??? demonstration, they even Our local paper, which could appropriately be namâ€" view", features such hot items as the bake sale down the street and the junior hockey scores.
