by Don Dreisinger The Waterloo Toyota mid- gets regained some of their old form which they show- ed in winning the Gold Puck tournament by whipping the opposition in three hub league games last week. Brian Wilhelm. back in action after a leg injury, made an end-to-end rush to score unassisted early On Monday night, they travelled to Woodstock and came home with a con- vineing 6-1 victory, their Re good effort in almost month. There was no scoring in the first period and Waterloo didn't get rolling until midway through the second When Terry Kuenzie took a pass from Dean Woelfle and Steve Beaupre to open the scoring. Regaining Gold Puck fptm Mario Mayer. who has strengthened Waterloo's de- fence considerably with his strong play, made it 2-0.be- fore the period ended, assis- ted by Mike Yostirack. _ Toyota's win three hub league games The Toyota's downed Stratford 6-2 at Waterloo arena Tuesday night. It was Waterloo‘s first win in five games against Strat- ford. The Toyota's looked a bit shaky at the beginning as Stratford opened the scor- ing at the 58-second mark. Waterloo found their legs quickly and rapped in three goals before the period ended and added one in the second. Stratford got back in the game early in the third, making it 4-2 but Waterloo took the pressure off by adding two more goals. . in the third period. Dean Woelfle then got two breakaways, scoring both times. He was assisted on one by Steve Beaupre who is one of Waterioo's better men at feeding the puck tothehead man. Mike Yosurack scored the final tally assisted by Jim Reinhart and Reg Sch- narr. Dale Johnson scored Woodstock's goal late in the third period. Brian Steffter played a standout game in goal for Waterloo, keeping Wood- stock to one goal. In the third period the scored seesawed with David Best. John Putchli and Phil Detroit played heads-up hockey to defeat Canadiens 6-4 in the first game. Terry Mills played a standout game in the Detroit net as the opposition swarmed in on him during the game/ I have one beef though. There are a few boys being tagged now for their lack of respect, strong language and general arrogant attitude being shown on the ice. If this continues, the in- dividuals concerned can look forward to a game suspen- sion. Gord Dennis opened the scoring for Detroit midway through the second period and Dick Bauer made it 2-0. Paul Manion scored for the Canadiens only to have Tom Swartz put Detroit ahead by two again. by Doug Thiel Tuesday night's hockey produced some fine. excit- ing competition. The teams are having full partieipa- tion this year as the boys flock to Moses Springer arena on Tuesday nights. Coach John Ford and my- self continually stress "sportsmanship and good clean hockey which paid off in this game and made us Reg Schnarr scored from Wilhelm and Mario May- er. Mike Yosurack com- pleted the scoring. from Wilhelm and Schnarr. Dan Pigeon and Brad McCann scored for Stratford. Waterloo thumped Galt 10-2 in the Galt arena Thursday night. The game could easily have turned into a blood bath but for Waterioo's excellent sports manship'. Brett Slickler scored twice and picked up an assist. John Lanteigne, Jim Karges and Pete Dumart scored once each. Jim Reinhart, who seem- ed to be digging harder and playing better hockey, also picked up two goals, one unassisted and the other from Ken, Brown and Brian Wilhelm. All the Waterloo play- ers deserve a pat on the back for sticking to hockey rather than head hunting and fighting as Galt was continually doing, specially after the score was 5-1. For Detroit. Dan Blair scored once. Tom Swartz. twice more, to complete his hat trick, Paul Manion was awarded a penalty shot in the third period but was outsmarted by Detroit goa- lie. Terry Mills. Doug Snyder scored both Buffalo goals, one in the first period and one in the second. Dave G'ood tallied for the Rangers. Bruin goalies Tom Waure- Chen played a strong game to earn his first shutout. Honma/ scoring for the Canadiens. Brian Wilhelm scored twice for Waterloo, assist- ed by Larry Douglas and Marc Thiel on one and Dean Woelfle on the other. Buffalo got back in the win column by defeating Rangers 2-1. This was a tight contest and the two goalies, John Wolf for Buf- falo and Paul Freiburger. had a busy night The Bruins humbled the lowly Hawks 5-0. They scor- ed two in the first and third and one in the second. The Hawks didn't seem to have the drive needed for a win. 14 PRINCESS ST. WEST proud of our team for their efforts. A new line was formed for this game, with Phil Hoff- man coming up from the house league and playing center between Ken Brown and Mike Yosurack. Phil did an excellent job setting up four goals, one by Brown and three by Yo- surack. Dean Woelfle scor- ed twice and Steve Beaupre, Larry Douglas, Barry Mus- seiman and Terry Kuenzie scored once each. Brown, Yosurack. Mus- selman, Guglee, Wilhelm, Beaupre and Pauley each had one assist. Ralph John- son scored for Gait. The team's success for these three games can be attributed to the improved play of defencemen Barry Musselman and Brian wo- helm, who have been starting to get the puck out of our end effectively. The addition of Mario Mayer has strengthened the blueline considerably. The biggest factor in the improved offence is that everyone is passing that puck to the lead man which is most important in winning hodtey games. Stickler leads the league scoring with 24 points: Doug Snyder, 19; Dan Blair. 17; Phil Hoffman, 15: John Lanteigne. 14; Kerry Crofts and Tom Swartz. 13: Paul Boehmer, John Putchli and Die Bauer, 12; Philip Bauer, 10.
