These were made up of factory and office workers, church groups and organized clubs and most of the bowlers were over The only time younger bowlers got a chance was when they were pin boy. After the leagues were over they would get together and up for each other . Et was then that Bob Totzke, er of the Waterioo Bowling Lanes at that time decided to tart pin boy league, to give 'mnger bowlers experience and teach them fundamentals of the Each team consisted ofâ€" two adults and four pin boys and from this league they produced some of Waterloo‘s best fiveâ€"pin bowlâ€" ers. & This league dwindled when the pin boys were replaced by the automatic machines. There were many leagues like it throughout Canada and the same thing hapâ€" pened to them. Finally the Canaâ€" In 1963 a committee was set up in Ontario and the youth bowling council formed. By 1964 a nationâ€" al committee had been set up. To date there are 45,000 young bowlers in the YBC throughout Canada, from Vancouver to Newâ€" foundland. Every year they hold a national bowling championship in a different city. To bowl in this event you must qualify through the fourâ€"stepsâ€"toâ€"stardom system. folded. The first step is the house qualâ€" ifying round held in January; the second is the zone rollâ€"offs of all the houses in the zone. The third step is the provincial lampionship where they must earn the right to represent their province in the national chamâ€" pionship. Ontario which has more than half of the bowlers in the YBC is broken up into two groups, northern and southern. To finance this tournament the young bowlers hold an annual chocolate sale and last year raisâ€" ed over $360,000. Every Province sends 3% bowlers to the championships and Ontario sends 72. ~ Of course this is not the only tournament for the bowlers there they have a doubles tournament. In November there is Iâ€"Beatâ€"Myâ€" Average Day. L In December they have a famâ€" ily twosome. tournament. This gives the parents a chance to bowl with their children and help them win an award. In February there is a Valentine Day tournament. Master bantam and the master junior tournaments are favorite events where juniors get a chance to bowl with the master bowlers in their respective houses. The Waterloo Lanes has a fine youth program going. The lanes are also members of the YBC and have 220 bowiers in their proâ€" _ There are 151 bantams, 38 junâ€" iors and 31 senior bowlers. The bantams bow! on Saturday mornings in two divisions. Supervisors for the bantams are Mrs. Barb Alderton and Mrs. Carâ€" olyn Gross. â€" o The juniors bowl on Sunday afternoon and supervisors are Woody Dotzert and Steve Noble. The seniors bow! Sunday nights and their supervisor is Phil Wynne. These people are to be comâ€" mended for the fine effort and time they give to these young bowlers. â€" Walter Valentan has the big hand in organizing this youth proâ€" gram and has put many hours in to help it develop to its present standard. Some of the credit must also go to the masters bowlers, Orv Bauâ€" man, Mrs. Jo Feick and Walter Valentan.
