From the first of July, which was the season even then, until almost the end of the duck season when the water started to freeze over, we pursued the longâ€"nosed fish with a diliâ€" gence that would have earned a million dollars if it had been applied to work. _ _ _ > _ We haven‘t bothered with them for years, feeling that we had caught our share of the big fish if we never took another. However, for the sake of some film, we plan on takâ€" ing up the pursuit again this year. We hope we haven‘t lost all our ability, for it‘s about eighteen years since we last bothered to even wet a line for them. IN KEEPING WITH THE NEW policy of the Department of: Lands and Forests in declarâ€" ing the seasons well in advanâ€" ce of hunting time, here are the ruffed grouse seasons for this year in Southern Ontario: In the area south of Highâ€" way No. 17 from Mattawa to Sault Ste. The subject he chose was partiâ€" cularly _ interesting for the sportsmen _ present at . the meeting, because they all at one time or another have come across fish or rabbits or even deer where some of the paris itic conditions he described, were present. In most cases the meat was still eatable, if it was well cooked, however there was some exceptional cases. Our sincere thanks to Dr, Campbell for his fine lecture. As we mentioned in ‘last week‘s news report, the Westâ€" side Dairy party led by their manager Fred Brohman was headed North for a week‘s \ï¬shing. The party returned over the weekâ€"end, and being true conservationists, they reâ€" turned with a catch of fish well within the limit The party took ten lake trout and two pike, all the lake trout were seven pounds and over. lt would appear that Uncle Dudâ€" ley (Walter Heldman) was the champ in the party, he caught four of the fish himself. Walâ€" ter or Uncle Dudley lost seven or eight pounds of weight durâ€" ing the week‘s fishing but it was not through lack of food or because he was on a diet. It appears that the black flies were so bad, that they would swarm in on him and remove several pieces of flesh and take {the flesh to the nearest shore ‘|and divide it up and eat it. | After several of such attacks |Uncle Dudley was bound to | lose some weight. Despite the | black flies, the weather was | good and the whole party agâ€" | reed they had a wonderful outâ€" |ing, in fact they are looking | forward to next year‘s trip..
