Pheasants probably suffer more than partridge. The grouse is a native bird and when snow gets deep and food is scarce onfl:egm:d,besimplg‘mecmtoflxewpofthepophru‘ees and feeds on the buds. fact he can last indefinitely on this Its the long tailed bird that suffers the most, for if he can‘t reach ground food and the corn fields have been stripâ€" ped, he‘s in a bad way. These birds we have found can live out the toughest weather, provided they have food. Actually ‘ enough food to kem several pheasants alive wouldn‘t weigh more than the shells you carry in one pocket. How about filling the other pocket or better still a packsack with grain and distributing it this winter. Its not only kindness to the birds, but it insures you having hunting in the same HEAVY SNOW SO FAR this season may have acted as A deterrent to some hunting, but it is also creating a hardship with our game. | ol 2 s . iss L wouss nds xriTWe Animais, such as rabbits and fox do not suffer so much, for rabbits will eat bark when the going gets tough and if need be, a fox can always raid a farmers hen coop. . cover TROUT FISHERMEN WILL be glad to learn that the Deâ€" partment of Lands and Forests are approaching the problem of getting good fishing back into some of our trout lakes in a realistic manner. Three of what were at one time, top speckled trout lakes were treated with fish toxicant on October 21st. Al of them are in the Powassan area, and all of them have been ruined as trout lakes by bait fisherâ€" men so stupied they liberated their unused bait minnows in the lakes, with the result they now eontain a great many more perch than â€" speckled trout. Its true that speckled trout do eat small perch, but perch will also eat small speckled trout and who ever heard of a perch that wasn‘t hungry. When the two become assocâ€" iated in the same water, its always the trout that suffers, never the perch. The chemical use is known as toxaphene and while it will kill all the fish in the lake, it is harmless to domestic aniâ€" mals or to humans who might The lakes involved in this particular poisoning are Turtle, Pascal and Little Clear Lakes. All are in Boulter township and all offered exâ€" cellent trout fishing before the introduction of perch. Poisoning these lakes may put the fishing back a few years, but its the one and only way of untimately bringing it back again. YOU WING SHOTS who long to legally see a game bird over the barrels of your shotgun sometime before spring, have that opportunity if you don‘t ingist on birds that are reâ€" cognized as game birds in this country and have a season placed on them.
