B. C. SOCIAL CREDIT One of the best recipes for long life is work and right living. The other day a 101-year-old Cornish woman, Mrs. Susan Robins, told a re- porter how she reached such a ripe old age, saying, "I worked in the tin mines when I was six years old, leaving home every morning at six o'clock and walked three miles. The day lasted until seven. when I trudged back again. About twenty of us worked on the dressing floors, and if we were late or dwaddled a quarter was taken off our pay of 2%d per day. At home I was often up early in the morning, knitting socks, earning 1d an ounce. I never had a doe- tor, never took any medicine, and never had a holiday." She gave as her recipe for good health, hard work, early to bed and early to rise, and keep out of danger. Hotels and restaurants lose thousands of dollars every year from the disappearance of silverware; linen and fixtures. Patrons of such establishments seem to regard such things as public property. Men and women who would scorn to class themselves among the shop-lifting fraternity have little eomptinetion in helping Ehenliselves to whatever catches their eye in a otel. The collecting instinct is not in itself harm- ful. It may be a very interesting hobby. If hone felt the urge to collect there would be no mu- seums or art galleries. But there “is a definite line between "meum" and "tuum" and no one has any right to go through life on the principle that "what's yours is mine, what's mine is my own." When it comes to injuring property and removing the parts of a building, the gathering of souvenirs becomes a crime. And it should be punished as such. Yesterday it appeared as though the Government forces were more than holding their own against the onslaughts of the rebel forces. One thing is certain and that is whether the government or rebel forces win, Spain will emerge badly crippled and the ultimate loser. The new Vancouver City Hall that cost a million and a half was recently opened to the public. Over the week-end 30,000 sightseers in.. spected the handsome building and, incidentally, carried a good deal of it away with them. Tele- phones were wrenched from the walls; doornobs bearing the city coat‘of arms were purloined; electrical fixtures were ripped out and rubber wash-basin plugs were carried away as sou- yenirs. Some of the patriotic citizens carved their names on the gold-leaf ornamentation and woodwork. The Minister of National Revenue esti- - ..._. Many people have a mania for collecting souvenirs but a large number of these enthusiasts keep their ambitions within bounds and have a regard for the possessions of others. There is an element, however, that will go to any lengths to get what they want. They would feel horrified if their depredations were regarded as theft, but theft it is-and of the meanest kind. «hmamuvmmhâ€"ummjmnduthumdw "ttme, "W-..0tst..-6eMsramd_h.ierdurratGtnarrwmtmretr.'m_tts . ummcmm,mmmnohumummmdum_whu* . . . -uts.aiB-bereetue--Wm&trt'.-thatt hum. The recent rise of wheat to $1.46, a new seven year peak, indicates a wheat shortage. The action of governments in various countries to meddle with the supply and demand now seems to have not been too sound. Knock! Knock! (he said). Who's there? Abt Ab who? Ab-Dicnte! Then, Knock! Knock! Who's there? Dick! Dick who? Ah-mek-ate'. Premier King showed good judgment in the recent British constitutional crisis by observing complete silence.
