Company. es Dire L. W. SHUH REâ€"ELECTED PRESIDENT; ' Directore > FOUR DIRECTORS ARE REâ€"ELECTED were reâ€"elec Addresses were made by President L. W. Shuh, managing director Arâ€" thur Foster, Ford S. Kumpf and James C. Haight. o You will note from the statement submitted, that while we have more policies in force than last year, there is less insurance in force and a very considerable drop in the preâ€" mium income. This is due to the fact that at the beginning of the year we found it necessary to raise our farm rates, particularly in Eastern Ontario where farm losses Those present included: L. W. Shuh, W. G. Weichel, Arthur Foster, Jos. Stauffer, of Galt, J. Howard Simpson, Guelph, Ford S. Kumpf, E. J. Bauer, Oscar Rumpel, J. C. Haight, W. R. Bricker, F. H. Moser, R. S. Bean, J. A. Fischer, C. H. Ruppel, E. Rotharmel and J. Gillesâ€" pie. In seconding the motion for the adoption of the directors‘ report, the viceâ€"president, W. G. Weichel, took occasion to refer to the loss susâ€" tained in the death of one of their colleagues, Richard Roschman, a director of the company since 1915. Managing Director‘s Report As is my usual custom at the Anâ€" nual Meeting, I shall give a brief resumé of the year‘s operations. The directors‘ report was read by the president, L. W. Shuh, while Arthur Foster read the report of the managing director. An interesting feature of the meeting was the unveiling in the board room of a fine oil painting of the worthy president, L. W. Shuh. A short address was made in connection with the unveiling by viceâ€"president W. G. Weichel. It is noteworthy that this longâ€" established â€" and â€" soundlyâ€"managed company has built up a very subâ€" stantial reserve fun(f, which is a source of increasing strength to the Company. The Waterloo Mutual continues to maintain its strong poâ€" sition among fire insurance comâ€" panies in Canada by consistently following progressive yet conservaâ€" tive policies in the conduct of its business. The 67th annual statement preâ€" sented at the annual meeting of the policyholders of the Waterloo Muâ€" tual Fire Insurance Co., held on Saturday at the head office in Watâ€" erloo, again disclosed the strong financial position of the Company whose total cash ussets, including accrued interest, amount to $1,663,â€" 281.08. The residue of premium notes is $204,328.05, making the total assets of the Company $1,â€" 867,609.13. Arthur Foster Managing director of the Water loo Mutual Fire Insurance Co. For the Year Ending December 3lst, 1930 The Sixty-Eighth‘ Annual Statement of RECEIPTS ASSETS ... $75,398,013 Government Deposit There have been very few changes in the.staff during the year. Our chief Inspector resigned in the spring and was honored by the Directors with a place on the Board, where we still have the benefit of his years of experience on the road. It may be necessary very shortly to again place a second man on the road in order to carry out the policy of replacing our farm business with a better class of insurance. There were a few other changes in the staff which is now complete and competent to carry on the work in the office. Ford S. Kumpf, a director of the Company, briefly commented on the financial statement presented. He said it.was worthy of note that of $1,663,281 of assets, not one dollar of interest or principal was overdue and speaks very highly of the sound investments made. The management of the Company showed wisdom in building up a subâ€" stantial surplus ‘which was gratifyâ€" ing to both policyholders and direcâ€" tors. It also provides ample proâ€" vision for abnormgal losses which the Waterloo Mutual, in common with other fire insurance companies, susâ€" tained the past couple of years. . J. C. Haight, K.C., solictor of the company, said that with continued sound and progressive management the Company would continue to progress. Mr. Haight paid tribute to the memory of the late director, Richard Roschman, who held the confidence and full respect of memâ€" bers of the Board and fellow citizens. In his death the town lost a citizen of high integrity. He said the directors showed its confidence in electing to the board William R. The losses on farm business durâ€" ing the last year were again very heavy and contributed almost enâ€" tirely to the fact that on the year‘s operations we had an underwriting loss. The investments of the Company are in an excellent condition. On December 31st not one dollar of principal or interest was in arrears, and while the market value of some of our investments has diminished, yet we are hopeful that with the reâ€" turn of more prosperous times the value of our securities will advance to normal proportions. It is gratifyâ€" ing to know that during the year there was a very considerable inâ€" crease in the market value, with a result that there is very little difâ€" ference now between the book value and the market value of our securiâ€" ties. In concluding these remarks I wish to thank the Board of Direcâ€" tors for their kind consideration of all questions placed" before them during the year and for the helpful advice given from time to time. Arthur Foster, Manager. Waterloo, Ontario, January 31, 1931. We succeeded in securing a large volume of new business but as these , policies are smaller in amount und| premiums much smaller than farm | risks, there was not sufficient insurâ€" ance placed or sufficient income deâ€" rived from this new business to make up for the heavy loss in the furm income. It is our intention to continue this policy during the com-‘ ing year by trying to replace the loss on farm business by new urban business, and we trust that in the! course of time a drop in the loss ratio will justify this action. I have been excessive. As a conseâ€" quence of this raise in rates, many !armcx, sought insurance | elseâ€" wheri. To make up for this loss of business, efforts were made to inâ€" crease our business in towns and cities, with gratifying results. This business is the most desirable and at the same time the most difficult to obtain. $ _ 45,000.00 1,535,362.89 $ 1,663,281.08 204,328.05 $ 1,867,6090.13 $350,372.35 70,451.62 $564,275.25 18,408.46 39,644.39 75,010.38 20,300.00 5,036.38 1,929.02 30,480.69 25,163.10 188.06 Other Speakers POBROE OO oooeree in areecvrnyenans Rebates, Cash and Mutual Reâ€"insurance ............0.0.
