Another strategic adrantage would be afforded in the event _ of Britains‘ being engaged in war with & maval power. The wheat growing capacity of the regions which would be opened up by a new railway . is sufficiegt for the Mother Country‘s whole food supply and Canada beirg the most accessible of England‘s coiâ€" unial possessions, this would _ natâ€" urally give her & feeling of | giealer security. The article concludes as folâ€" lows:â€" ‘"‘But, â€" while the strategic importâ€" ance oi the new line must not be ovâ€" erlooked, it is the economic advanâ€" tages it offers both to Canada _ and to the Mother Country that arrest immediate attention. Canada is « on the threshold of a new era in her deâ€" velopmert and she may legitimately logk to the Mother Country, . with its large population and accumulated wealth, to assist her in the task of defending: her political and economic intergrity, and of strengthening . her positicr as an integral portion of the British Empire." Mr. C. W. Young, editor and proâ€"l prietor of the Cornwall Freeholder, one of the very best weekly . news, paper© in the province, took a tri> westward the other day and on hns‘ returo journey stopped off at Berun, for & short time to view the thrivicg town and its latest important inâ€" dustry, sugar making from beets. Mr. Young is quite familiar with the old and new methods of manufacturing sugar, having been in close . touch years ago with the sugar industrty )# the semiâ€"tropics and made occasional visits to/the land where the _ sugar cane grows. He publishes a very readable and interesting article in the last issue of his journal in reference to his vis it to our town and the works of the Ontario Sugar Company, but we have only space for the tollowing extracts: â€"‘‘Berlin with its 10,000 inbabitants is a tribute to the industry and actiâ€" vity of its German population, and is probably the bome ofâ€"mofe manuâ€" facturing establisaments than _ any place of similar size in the Dominion â€"in fact there is â€" hardly anything that isr‘t made there, and _ though the wages earned by the operatives, in the factories are small on the avâ€" erage, the people are thrifty, their dwellings are mostly owned by the qccupants and are generally ol white brick. The more pretentious . private residences, the elegant turnouts . to be seen on the streets and the goods in the stores tell of wealth and genâ€" eral prosperity. _ _ _ Jn Waterloo, . the twin brother of Ferâ€" lin, a mile or two to the northâ€"is an equally thriving, though somewhat smaller community. The two towns mre copnected by an electric railway, and the land. between had been _ so built â€"up, that the two places _ are practically one, though the, jealousy that inevitably exists under similar conditions, may prevent théir peing joined as one municipality. Taking a trolley car at the Betlin post office, â€" and crossing the Gramd Trunk track on an overhead . bridge, w tide over a mile or two of an exâ€" ceedingly crooked route brings us in front of the latest addition to _ the industries ofâ€"Canada and Berlin as wellâ€"the works of the Ontacio â€"SSuâ€" gar Company. This is a series . of buildings mostly of white brick, the maijn‘ refinery and warehouse .baving a frontage of nearly 500 feet and an ‘average depth of 74 feet, partly two and ‘partly three stories high. There Are numerous other structures, the "whole plant occupying nearty © ten It seems almost incredible, but less than 11 mthmtb(flrn rod was <turned on farm where the factory is located, and on November %, 190%, the first ( grains of sugar were made. f Rev. There is an agitation for several more, including the neighborhoods of Whitby, Peterâ€" boro‘, Lindsay, Newmarket, and St7 Catbarines. Anotber . suffering industry _ was heard from in a letter to Mr. Thos. Southworth, from a Western Ontarâ€" io canner. The writer states that there ( is room in his neighborhood for several hundred women to be einâ€" ployed, presumably in picking fruit, and in preparing it for canning _ in the factories. This work gives lemâ€" porary employment to hundreis . of people in the canning sections ¢very summer, _ when the houses _ emply themselves to help the canners and earh pin money. How the immigraâ€" tior of feople for this purpose alone would fit in with our other condiâ€" tions is not clear. The fact that Bridgeport has . rot occupied this column for some time, i en C% aund o e dn ioi ts es is no because it was deprived of suitable public entertainment, but owing to the business relations _ of this upâ€"toâ€"date village, time did not allow.
