The large additions to and complete overhauling of Mr. Seagram‘s fine residence in the east ward, which approximate $20.000 forms the largest item bere. In the south ward the improvements consist almost wholly of dwelling houses, Two Prosperous Towns and Dressing Cowns A Brief Retrospective Glance Over the Work of the § :f; The steady progress and substantial growth of the town of Waterloo is fully attested,bf the extent of the building operations during the past year. The year 1901 has been one of unusua‘! activity in the building trades and is remurkable for the number of new houses that have been erected, no less tran thirtyâ€"two fine residences having been added to the town‘s assessable property, the total value of which, together with other improvements, will exceed the splendid sum of $83,000. _ If other local improvementsare added the grand total for 1901 wi‘l reach $90.000. As far as residences are concerned this has been the banner year of the town‘s history and speaks volumes for the thrift and eaterprise of its citizens and also attests the faith capitalists and builders have in the fature of the town. Although we have no good reason to eomplain of the growth of our town in the past, we believe it has been to no small extent retarded by the scarcity of houses which has existed for some years back. While the extensive operâ€" ations of the year might afford some degree of relief to the houseâ€"hunter, they will by no means supply the demand, maoy of the dwellings having been, rented before a brick was laid. We publish herewith a summary of the varâ€" lous improvements in the town during 1901, which will give our readers a fair idea of what has been done. mouL t Jubn Hahn, 1 1â€"2 story brick house with kitchen, masonry, Pinke, ~carpenters, Ovens Mrs. §S.â€"L. Mr In the early part of the week repri sentatives of the Trades and Izi Council waited upon prominent mem= bers of the Board of Trade and enâ€" quired if there would be any rdbl. means of securing Mr. 8. J.‘ Williams, the popular and untiring President of the Board of Trade, for the past two years, to change his former decision which he publicly made lndoallnï¬r to be a candiuate for the Mayoralty. joint mesting was arranged by promâ€" inent business men and & â€"committee from the Trades & L@borCouncil, and after some discussion, a requisition headiog was framed and ~gentlemen appointed to circulate the petition, and have it signed by as many electors &# possiole. _ 80 s e Mr. Williams bas been absent from Berlin during these proceedings, and when notified of the meeting at the Council Chamber on Friday evening, when the requisition was hauded to him, be was unaware of the nature of the meeting and was completely taken by surprise when the requisition about twelve feet long was handed to him. Addresses were delivered by the memâ€" bers of the committee, after which Mr, Williams, with the requisition in his hand, made a brief address. He said words could not express his appreciaâ€" tion of the honor they had conferred upon him. Mr. Williams regretted that he was forced to decline to be & candidate for the Mayoralty for 1902, owing to the fact that his business inâ€" terests at the W. G. & R. would not permit of him giving the attention to the civic questions which will arise during 1902, that would be required at the hands of the Mayor, whoever he may be. He dealt with some of the issuos which would oomm and aaid that as a citizen he d give the same attention to them as he has done in the past, and would continue to labor for the progress of thé "best town in Canada."
