After 12 years of research, Dr. Stern announced that his technique of intraspinal injections of alcohol and Vitamin Bâ€"1, had been invariably successful in his last 60 cases. Earlier attempts, while partially successful, had been hindered by complications, in which the size of the dose has proved to be the determining factor. Vitamin Bâ€"1 Added Fundamentally, the effectiveness of the treatment, Dr. Stern explainâ€" ed, is due to the connection of the spinal fluid with the sympathetic nerâ€" vous system. In experiments on cats, the disintegration of sensory nerves when so treated was clearly shown. It is this effect, he said, that makes the alcohol injections a deadener of pain. A new treatment which has proved successful in easing pain in such diseases as cancer, angina pectoris and chronic arthritis, by intraspinal injections of alcohol, was described to the Washington Medical Associaâ€" tion by its inventor, Dr. Elias L.
