Davidson, barrister, is leaving â€" Durham for Peterborough about Feb. 1st, having found a tempting opening in that town. The news has caused a disagreeable surprise for Mr. Davidson has proved a yaluable and public spirited citizen, lending himself and his talents freely to many worthy objects. He will be greatly missed from social circles, concerts, &c.. where his versatile ability was ever in demand _and as one of the Lactosse boys his lace will be hard to fill. â€" His Durham Friends will rejoice to hear of his future prosperity. Mr. Hugh H. McLean of Winnipeg, was a culler at our office this week. He cams home to visit his wother in‘ Bentinck, at present in poor health and will of course yisit his old friends in Priceville before returning. ‘He gives us a rosy picture of the future of his aâ€" dopted city where the building operaâ€" tions for 1903 cost over $6,000 000. more ) than double that of 1902. This in part | consisted of 50 warehouses, factories, | banks, and office blocks and 63 retail stores. Twelve hundred new dwellings ‘ went up at a cost of $2,600 000 and $175,â€" | 000 was expended on church and educa. Ltional buildings and the character of all is of the best. This beats Durham someâ€" what «and truly all Canada will watch | this young giant as the west develops, ; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. G. Mutch and child, of Lumsden, Assa., are home at present for a month or two. _ Mr. Mutch is one of the progressive men of that new country and does a yery large impleâ€" ment business. The hope of that coun. try he assures us is a line of railway to Hudson Bay, and a cessation of the practice of allowing public lands to get into the bhands ef speculators. The many South Grey peeple in and near Lulx:wden. are Mr., Mutch says, all doing waell well. To the officers and members Miss Mae Dickenson was in Hamilton on Friday last at an informal gathering and the Toronto News report siuys : **Miss Dickenson sang a number of songs which pleased the audience imâ€" mensely.* Hear her at toae Scottish Concert next week in Town Hall. Hear Fax also in "Lock High Men." Mr. and Mrs. Adam Little of Lumsâ€" den, Assa., are visiting their old homes and meeting many friends, They are having health and prosperity in the breezy west and they look it too. His father and mother find the climate suits them well. Mr, Jos. Lindsay, of West Superior, Wisconsin, was home for a week and left Tuesday after visiting â€"relatives here. He is still in charge of construcâ€" tion work en the E. M. Ry. and looks as if the west and the work agreed with him, Mr. Jno. 8. McDonald, Hannah,. N. D. is a guest of his uncle, Mr. A. C. Meâ€" Donald in town and with other friends nearbv, Though born here, this is his first conscions yisit as when he left 24 years ago, he was but a wee thing. Miss Barbara Watt. left Monday afternoon for Toronto, where she inâ€" tends remaining for some time. _ Barâ€" barra missed the morning train, but however left in good company. Mr. Don. Robertson left Wednesday morning for his home near Kincardine, after having spent an enjoyable two weeks‘ visit at his uncle‘s, Mr. A. D. Browning‘s. Miss Velma Williamson, of the REâ€" viEw Staff, has been laid off this week by illness, but the G. T. R. as it happenâ€" ed gave us lots of time. Mr. George McDonald ijr. left on Monday afternoon for Hamilton, where be has secured a good situation. â€" Sucâ€" cess Geordie. £ Mr. and Mrs McDonald, Dakota ar» home to yisit Mrs. McDonald‘s tather , Mr. Charter Smith and other friends. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. John Bradley ( Lena Wolfe ) on their union of hands and hearts last Wednesday. Miss May Williamson left Tuesday morning for Galt, on an extended yisit to her sister, Mrs H, Benton. Messrs. G. McKechnie and John Ehr hardt went down Monday to 1 Board Meeting of the N. P. C. Co. Mrs. James Carson was in Mt. Forest lately attending the funeral of her broâ€" ther, Mr. Henry Wright. A few young people spent a very enâ€" joyabie time at Mr. Robt. Williamson‘s on Monday eyening. Miss Cousins, of Trowbridge is spendâ€" ing a few weeks with her sister, Mrs. H. McRae. Mr and Mrs Buchan and family spent a day lately with Walkerton friends. Mr, Oliver, of Listowel, is the gues: ot Mr. Hugh McRae. Mr Allan Bell is under the doctor‘s care this week. CARD OF THANKS. ONTARIO ARCHIVEsS TORONTO THE DURHAM REVIEW of the called to meet on Ma-r;hl'O A The long guessing contest of the World and the Mail, as to when the General Elections would he held came to an end for a time on Saturday last when the following announcement apâ€" peared in the Globe in a special desâ€" patch from Oftawa: _ "The Governâ€" ment has been engaged fo. some days in considering certain modifications which have besn asked by the Grand Trank Railway Company to the conâ€" tract entered into ijast session, The Goyernment is of the opmion that such modifications must be submitted to and discussed by Parlhament, and therefore it is the intention of the Prime Minister to advise his Excellency to call a session ‘ at an early lay." * N â€"A uniqne Commission is that which met in Londonfor the first time last Friday. It was proposed and projecâ€" ted by Mr. Chamberlain and consists of 68 leading representatives of the trade and commerce of Great Britain. Its purpose is to ascertain facts bearing on the wisdom of changing the Free trade policy ot Britain. |___â€"The Legisiature was oFened last i Thursday with great eclat, Lieutâ€"Gov. | Clark having introduced some spectacâ€" , ular features, unused for years. _ The formalities over, new members introâ€" duced, and the sEeechcs of the mover and seconder of the address made, the House adjourned till Monday. _ Mr. Whitney opened his criticism on the address in a vigorous speech, which was r&p!ied to by Premler Ross in his most effective style. Mr Whitney Jjusâ€" tifiles the Lieutâ€"Gov. for calling the House, thus differing from a number of Conservative papers. _ His cheif point of attack was that the House had men called to head off election trials, but the premier showed that on many o¢â€" casions both in Ontario and in the Doâ€" minion, parliament had been called and election petitions unsettled. Twitâ€" ted with the Globe and its " barnacle" charges he made a slashing rejoinder, *‘Many a good ship with a valuable cargo has come to port with barnacles l on it, but little is ever expected from a ship with an unskilfual captain and a pirate on board.‘"‘ This sally will not be forgotten for some time. certaiuly try to carry into the camâ€" paign the same principles. At present the state of the roads make almost prohibitive ‘‘getting around," in most parts of Ortario. â€"A decided sigh of relief has been given by politicians at the announceâ€" ment of a session, thus precluding the distasteful idea of a campaign among winter snows and frost. _ Notwithstandâ€" 1 __â€"Toronto is all excitement over the discovery of frauds in the recent muâ€" nicipal election. â€" The surprising vote of an unpopular Controller (an office worth $1000 a year) in one of the wards looked suspicions, and an invoastigation was entered upon which proved that personation had been largely perpeâ€" trated. Man after man has been found who swears be did not yote, yet his name is on the poll book as having done so, men absent from the city and even dead men yoted, and now the ery is who is the criminal. and at least one deputy has been arrested for conâ€" niving at the business if not actually engaged in it. Then an ex alderman, of high standing, named Burns, has been discoyered to have voted at more | than one place, and he blames the officers, for making false entries, while they tiaim they know him â€"well. Fiom Mayor Urquhart â€" downwards there is a cry for punishment and Juadge Winchester has the situaiion in charge. ‘The absence of a numbered ballot is regretted at this Juneture, tor by its means a sure hand would have been placed on the criminals. I i cininfistatitiatud dr Bsc ic xi Sakc is is 34 set it aside as being outside of provinâ€" cial jurisdiction. Not to be baflged the government of the Territories introâ€" duced an amendment to the Game Act, making Sunday a "Close Season‘‘ fir all gameand birds under its protection throughout the year. _ ‘Thus the govâ€" ernment repaired the breach and both sides of the House applanded and gave unanimous approval. _ Not so slow. â€"Surday hunting and shooting in the N. West Territories was prohibited until the famous decision of the Privy Council re the Ontario Lord‘s Day Act â€"Retaliation counts. Germany is asking from Canada fayorcd nation treatment or her export trade here will be lost. It will be remembered that when Canada granted a preference to Britain, Germany was offended, and withdrew tariff favors from Canada. Two could play at this and Canada promptly placed a surtax on German goods. This surtax has hurt Germany so much, she now comes a sappliant for a return to the old conditions. â€"Hon. A. G.
