St. Catharines Standard - A resident of this city for the past 31 years and widely known and very highly esteemed by many friends, Norman Henry Smith, 24 Park Place, passed away on Monday at St. Catharines General Hospital, following a prolonged illness.
In his 86th year, the late Mr. Smith was born in Quebec and in his younger days was actively interested in all branches of sport, being a well known hockey player, as well as winning several trophies for his expert marksmanship. He was also well known in inventive circles and was recognized by the government.
In religion he was a member of the United Church and was also a member of Ottawa Lodge, No. 224, I.O.O.F., and of the Cantons. He was a veteran of the First Great War and served in Canada with the 43rd Regiment of the D.C.O.R. and for a number of years was an employee of the Welland Ship Canal.
To mourn his passing he leaves two daughters, Mrs. George Kanamacher of Grimsby, Mrs. Murray Meighan of this city; and two sons, Gordon P. Smith and Norman H. Smith, Jr., both of this city. Twelve grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren also survive.
