Toronto PMDA, P.O. Box 2000, Oakville, Ontario L6J 5E4. basketball championship at Nelson High School. The roughly 400 spectators were treated to a tremendous game from both teams. The Bruins received a stellar performance from 6'3" post player Harjeev Brar, who domi nated the boards at both ends on the way to a career high 34 points. Brant Hills coach Gregg McAnally, conceded that his team couldn't stop Brar reaching the basket. His presence defensively also made life difficult for the Hawk scorers. "Awesome!" was how Bruins' coach Steve Richardson summed up the efforts of Brar on the court. "Harjeev really wanted the championship in his graduating year, and he also want ed to prove that he was the best ele mentary ball player in Halton." The Bruins led the entire way, building a 12 point lead in the fourth quarter. The half court offence that the team had been working on all sea son clicked time and again. Some defensive adjustments designed to keep Brant Hills out of their running game were also decisive. In the final three minutes, Brar and power forward Noah Gataveckas fouled out, giving the Hawks their only real opportunities of the game, but River Oaks was able to hang on. A desperation shot at the buzzer by the Hawks that would have forced overtime glanced off the rim. To get to the final, the Bruins amassed 10 regular season wins against only one loss. That loss came in double overtime to E.J. James at their gym. In first round playoff action, River Oaks defeated New Central Cougars handily at home and headed for the first time to the Tier 1 Oakville final at Blakelock High School. The opponent was Falgarwood, who had lost to the Bruins in the first game of the season. The Bruins were nervous, and fell behind early, the result of missed opportunities and sloppy defence. A stunning 3-point play by Noah Gataveckas at the end of the third quarter closed the gap to three points and sent the Falgarwood star player to the bench with his fourth foul. Newly energized, the Bruins raced into the lead in the fourth and earned a 39-36 victory. The Halton semifinals were next and they again met up with Falgarwood who advanced through the wild card route by having the best record among the three Halton divi sional losers (actually, River Oaks would have also qualified this way, too, if they had lost their Oakville final to Falgarwood). This time, in the gym at Iroquois Ridge H.S., the Bruins came out fast and built a large lead into the fourth quarter. Falgarwood began to foul to stop the clock and get the ball back. River Oaks gave their coach night mares, going 3 for 18 from the free throw line. But a couple of clutch free throws late by point guard Adam Fieldhouse and two seeing eye bas kets from Brar and Gataveckas clinched a 40-37 win. At the victory celebration the next day, coach Steve Richardson told the school, "Harjeev's heroics got us our first championship. But don't forget that it was a total team effort at all of the practices and all of the games that got us here." The other starters on the team were James Little and Henry Duke. The players coming off the bench for the Bruins were Adam Lawton, Gareth Taylor, Brent Lukowski, Brock Kiely, Jordan Miller, Jeff Turnbull, Graham Stewart, Josh Fieldhouse and Dean Kenwood. Well done, boys. Also, coaching the team was Peter Stratford, who was off on a student exchange to New Zealand during the playoff run. He pretty much single- handedly organized the team's His- Hers Tournament held at White Oaks H.S., at which the boys and girls combined for the bronze medal. The gym falls into silence as the S t Dominic Dragons girls line up for their last foul shot of the game. The silence suddenly breaks into an excited roar as the ball sails through the net. The entire Dragons girls basketball season was like this. Game after game, the starters lined up for the opening jump ball in the hopes that the final score would be in their favour. Amy Clackett led the cheering squad on the bench, encouraging those playing and those on the bench to keep focused. Being on the court gives an amazing adrenaline rush and though nervous, the players are pumped.
