Armstrong, recently named a member of the Order of Canada, was honoured for meeting the Paul Harris Fellow criteria of "tangible and signifi cant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peo ples of the world." The presentation was made at the third annual Southern Ontario Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship dinner held a the Le Dome Banquet Hall, hosted by the Oakville-Trafalgar, Oakville, Oakville North and Oakville West Rotary Clubs. Special guest at the presentation was Carlo Ravizza of the Rotary Club of Milano Sud-Ovest, Italy, president-elect of Rotary International. Rotarians receiving Paul Harris Fellows were: representing Oakville-Trafalgar - John Kubacki, 1st; George Megaw, 1st; Joe Vet, 2nd; Paul Vetter, 2nd; and Peter Zulauf, 2nd; from Oakville North - Catherine McDermott, 1st; and Patricia Milthorpe, 1st; and from the Mississauga-Dixie Rotary Club, Hugh Stewart, 1st. Since then, humanitarian and educational pro grams have been added by Rotary International. Today, more than 450,000 men and women have received this honour, the highest award given by Rotary. The award is named after Rotary International's founder, Paul Harris, a lawyer in Chicago who established the movement in 1905. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition was established in 1957 to express the foundation appreciation for substantial contributions to its only program at the time - scholarships. The award is presented when a Rotarian donates US$1,000 to Rotary International in the recipient's name. A single contribution can provide school supplies to 1,200 children in Guatemala; cover the cost of 100 cataract and glaucoma opera tions at a Rotary-sponsored eye camp in India; or it can send an Italian scholar abroad for one academ ic year.
