The fantastic week of minor hock­ ey featured the top two teams battling it out for playoff supremacy from each of, the 21 divisions within the Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA). It's the MOM's volunteer group who pay for and plan the whole week which also includes trophies not only for the championship week teams, but also the various league awards. All of this costs well over $10,000 and the MOM's work hard the rest of the week to pay for it. One of the annual fundraisers is upcoming on April 17th and it's the popular annual dance and silent auc­ tion which will be held at the Galaxy Club in Oakville. The dance is typi­ cally sold out with upwards of 500 people in attendance. The Hockey MOM's are always appreciative of any support and items for the silent auction would be greatly appreciated. For the boys enrolled in the Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA), there is not just one woman but over 100. They like to be referred to simply as the hockey MOM's. Unsure as to what the event was about, I drove to the rink expecting to find a subdued game of minor hockey with maybe a few MOM's hanging around. But when I arrived, the rink was full and bursting with energy. Both adults and children were taking in the action and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. After meeting my contact, I was passed along a line of hockey MOM's into what I guessed was their arena headquarters. This was where I would find out all I wanted to know. Sitting down with a group of the MOM's, my first ques­ tions were, What is it? and why do it?. The first question was easy. The MOM's are an organization made up of volunteers who hold a championship and awards week for the teams in MOHA. The event is paid for and organized entirely by the hockey MOM's. The second question was a little tougher. I had three MOM's rhyming off countless reasons why they did this and it was then that I started to sense their passion. All of their answers boiled down to one central theme summed up perfectly by MOM's president Nancy Brooks. "We want to make sure every child leaves with a smile on their face." By looking at the children bouncing around the arena, it appeared they were achieving their goal. Although their week appeared to be a resounding suc­ cess, it wasn't until further conversation that I discovered how much effort these ladies had put forth. To fund the event the MOM's raise approximately $18,000, and they work year round, organizing fundraisers such as dances, auctions, bingos and skate exchanges. They also help with several charities by donating money and equipment. "Most of the women do it because their children get a lot out of minor hockey," stated one of the MOM's, "but it is also a bit of a social event." Whatever reason they do it for, they do it with energy and seem to enjoy themselves. "Other organizations do not do this," said one of the MOM's. "It is very community oriented." These MOMS realize they are part of something special and are proud of the fact that they can organize such an event for their kids, and so they should be. The OFHC, which has doubled its membership in just two seasons, play all of their games on the astro-turf at AppLeby College. The under-19 division consists of four teams that play a double-header each Thursday evening, while the masters division gathers for some pick-up on Tuesdays. The OFHC puts a special emphasis on welcoming and introducing new players to the game. As a seasoned junior coach at St. Thomas Aquinas, OFHC founder John Picone has much experience with helping the rookies. The OFHC will be holding three Saturday rookie clin­ ics prior to the start of the outdoor season on April 17th, 24th and May 1 st. These are at Appleby College. The OFHC also provides opportunities for its members to become NCCP certified coaches, and provincially certified field hockey umpires. The outdoor season begins the first week of May and runs right through to September. Registration deadline is Friday, April 9th.
