Third year textile student Peggy Mersereau created these scenes of nature and had them framed by a friend of hers in the furniture studio. Hence both the first and second place winners will receive original hand-crafted awards. "They are as identical as the can be (for orig inals)," explains the 45-year-old textile artist. "They are numbered, too - one of two and two of two. Since they were done for a commission, I feel they shouldn't be repeated." And the frames, she adds, make up an integral part of the awards. "They don't overwhelm the piece," she explains. She describes her Oakville scenes as "a styl ized representation of the natural beauty of the Oakville area." And although her original idea was to create one four-part screen, when she was asked to design the two Rising Star awards rather than one big one, she scaled down to two scenes. Enti tled Vista: Rising Star, each landscape includes a bright star, embroidered with metallic thread, ris ing in the sky. Photo by Barrie Erskine The two Rising Star awards for this year's Mayor's Awards were created by Peggy A. B. Mersereau and framed by a student in the furniture studio at Sheridan. Titled Vista-Rising Star, these are numbered originals.
