Friday, March 26, 1999 ' THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 1V * Committee recommends new schools in River Oaks and West Oak Trails (Continued from page 1) with many area seniors. Delegations to the board have told trustees these programs would be sorely missed in the community. Supporters have also argued that the board's enrolment pro jections for the school are sus pect. With the potential impact of ' two large apartment buildings in the nearby mid-town core area, the school could see its popula tion rise, rather than fall, as board staff predict. Other major committee rec ommendations were as follows: □ Build new elementary schools in Oakville River Oaks and south Georgetown, with openings to occur in September 2000. □ Build a new school in Oakville at West Oak Trails, with the opening to occur in September 2001. The school's site was moved from 021 to 020, which is considered more cen tral. □ All new schools suggested would have 600 spaces and be used by kindergarten-Grade 8 students. Construction of all new schools proposed would be sub ject to funding availability. □ A controversial boundary change to accommodate Fairfield's closure was deferred. Under the proposal, some stu dents currently walking to Glenview would be bused to King's Road school instead. During debate, Burlington trustee Sheila Flook said closures would displace 500 students at the three schools and the closure situation is still changing. "If a trustee has a flicker of doubt they should say no," she said. "We need new schools, but should we rob from one commu nity to give to another?" "The board shouldn't be mak ing decisions until the consul tant's study is available for review," noted one delegation, Robert Hayhow of Mohawk Gardens in Burlington. The report on demographics is expected within two weeks. But others warned of portable backlogs in growth areas and noted Peel Region's board has 700-800 portables. "If we don't address the issue, we'll be just like Peel," said board chair Ethel Gardiner. She suggested the board's school accommodation situation be reviewed on an ongoing basis. "This is just a beginning," she warned. Under new provincial funding rules, the board can't get money to build new schools in the north while they still have open schools in the south with extra classroom space. Burlington trustee David Abbott said closing schools may be the main way to obtain fund ing for new ones. "We need new schools and how else are we going to get them?"
