Brooklin Community Centre could be designated under Ontario Heritage Act Parvaneh Pessian ppessian@durhamregion.com BROOKLIN -- One of Whitby's oldest buildings could soon be recognized as a historically-significant property. Council has directed staff to report back on the possibility of designating the Brooklin Community Centre at 45 Cassels Rd. E. under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. "It has been a long-standing structure and property in the community and I'd like to see that we have something in place to protect it in the future as we grow," said North Ward Councillor Rhonda Mulcahy, who brought forward the motion at a recent meeting. The Ontario Heritage Act allows municipalities and the provincial government to designate individual prop- erties and districts in the province as being of cultural heritage value or interest. Located at the corner of Church Street and Cassels Road in Brooklin, the building served as the Bible Christian Church from 1876 to 1920. The church was then converted into the township hall and municipal offices were operated there for 46 years. In 1966, the building was named the Brooklin Community Centre. The centre has an upper hall and lower hall for dances or meetings, two kitchens, an elevator and parking. "I believe it to have both architectural and cultural heritage qualities," said Mulcahy. The item was referred to the town's planning and development department and Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) Heritage Whitby to report back on the designation.
