Ultimate IT n ic k !! 175 WYECROFT RD., OAKVILLE 845~6653 (BETWEEN KERR & DORVAL) www.lockwoodchrysler.com « o . to5, Wednesday, March 17, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Two Honda Civic Sedan models available filled to help clean off anything that might obstruct your vision. □ When dri ving in fog at night, there can be a build-up of mois ture on the wind shield. Use your windshield wipers. □ Remember that headlamps light up far less of the roadway when you're turning or in a curve. □ Keep your eyes moving. This makes it easier to pick out dimly lighted objects rather than by star ing directly at them. □ As you age, it becomes even more important to have regular eye exams. Many dri vers suffer from "nyctalopia" (night blindness -- the inability to see in dim light), and many aren't even aware of this con dition. □ Watch for erratic drivers and do your best to stay clear of them. (C ontin ued from p a g e D 7 > Cosmetic face-lifts have freshened front and rear styling. Inside, new fabrics upholster the seats. User-friendly rotary dials have replaced the old HVAC sliders. The new electronic dials are close at hand on an instru ment panel that is conveniently tipped towards the driver. That's about as exciting as it gets inside. The interior features low est common denominator styling in safely bland gray tones designed for mass acceptance by a large and diverse customer base. I'm a little big for a compact car but I never really felt cramped in the Civic. There's plenty of headroom and the dri ving position* is excellent with good visibility all round. Seating is comfortable with adequate legroom up front and enough space to tuck the toes under the front seats in back. The cabin is roomy enough for four full-size adults, maybe five at a stretch. Only two Civic Sedan mod els are available in Canada. The base LX comes fairly well equipped with dual airbags, tilt steering, rear seat heater ducts, 60/40 folding rear seat and radio antenna in the rear glass. A move up to the EX trim level will adds a cassette player to the stereo AM/FM, cruise control, power locks and win dows, tach, heated power mir rors, driver's seat height adjust ment and a centre console. Air conditioning and ABS can be added through a Group Option Package. The Civic Sedan comes stan dard with a smooth shifting 5- speed manual gearbox. A 4- speed automatic with electroni cally controlled lock-up torque converter and grade logic is also available. Like many Japanese automatics, the auto shift lever stops at the "3" position detente instead of "D" when you pull it down from "Park". This may be convenient for city driving, allowing you more deceleration leeway using engine braking in stop-and-go traffic but North American drivers will often catch themselves having to con sciously nudge the shifter up into torque lock-up "D" when they begin clocking highway speeds. Once you get used to this feature, you might find yourself using the shifter more than is usual in our "set-and-forget" automatic cul ture. No matter what your dri ving style, the auto tranny works well, shifting when it should with almost seamless precision. Five-speed fun or the effort less automatic, it all comes down to personal choice but note that the automatic will add a thou sand bucks to the Sedan's price, regardless of trim level. Honda Civic Sedan MSRPs start at $15,900 rising to a $19,700 plateau that includes all the available doo-dads. Price increases for 1999 have been limited to below two percent (from $100 to $300 more than the '98s, depending on model selection). As tested, my LX automatic listed at $16,900. I enjoyed driving the Honda Civic Sedan. Actually, the only problem I ever had with the car was when I wasn't driving it. Somehow, I could never remem ber where I'd parked it. Painted in the dark shade of Yuppie green that seems to be the buzz-color of the '90s, the Civic always seemed to lose itself in parking lots filled with a host of other Civics. I guess, in that sense, the Civic is a victim of its own suc cess and popularity. But as long as Honda keeps blending the right proportions of durability and economy and as long as the dedicated Canadians who build them in Alliston keep pushing their product up to award-winning standards, the Honda Civic Sedan will remain not only good value for the con sumer's dollar but also one of the best-selling cars of all time.
