The best way to deal with these protrusions is to box them in. When boxing- in, remember this rule: treat the sides as walls and the bottom as c e i l i n g . Essentially, this means either using drywall for both sides and the bottom or panel­ ing the sides of the box and installing ceiling tile on the bot­ tom. Never put ceiling tile on the sides or paneling on the bottom. Your method of boxing will differ depending on your choice of materials. For drywall, use a 1 5/8" metal track cut to form a 'U'- shape with a 2" shoe on both ends. This shoe is screwed to the underside of the joists giving you a frame to which you attach your drywall. For openings wider than 24" a 1X2 wood stiff­ ener must be installed inside the trick. Using a dry- wall screw, attach the wood to the track for added stability. Install your track at 16" on centre along the length of the duct. When mea­ suring your track, be sure to add the width and height of the duct.
