THE OAKVILLE BEAVERWednesday, March 10, 1999 D5 SPRING FASHION '99 Spring brings bridal fashions. Brides-to-be and grooms-to-be got to find out what's hot in wedding services these days at the Oakville Spring Bridal Show, held last Saturday at the Ramada Inn and Convention Centre. There were all kinds of features, including the latest in bridal fashions, musicians, planning tips, etc., and brides got a sneak peak of the luxurious bridal suite offered at Ramada Inn. Fashions were from Dor-Mel Bridal & Dress Salon of Oakville, and wedding planning seminars featuring Lorraine McMullen of Celebrations Event Planning. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales were donated to the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Charitable Corporation. Choose a flattering diamond design DO consider a mar quise or emerald cut that lies on the hori zontal (across the fin gers) if you have extra long fingers or a thin hand. The horizontal line will help to broad en the look of the hand. DON'T choose a diamond engagement ring with soft curves and a flat band if your fingers are not as slen der a you'd like. The clean, defined lines of an emerald or princess- cut diamond with accent baguettes are better choices. DO wear a ring with height by setting the diamond up about 5 MM above your hand to make your fin gers appear longer. This style also helps small hands carry off the look of a larger dia mond. DON'T forget that the traditional round brilliant diamond flat ters every hand shape and size. Because it sparkles the most bril liantly when well-cut and is the most versa tile of all shapes, the round brilliant contin ues to be the most pop ular shape used in dia mond engagement rings and diamond jewellery. DO consider wide diamond bands to shorten long thin fin gers N very narrow diamond bands will make fingers appear longer. DON'T immedi ately discount the pos sibility of wearing your favourite fancy shape if it doesn't appear to flatter your hand. All shapes come in different propor tions. For example, a pear-shaped diamond can be "chubby" (wide) which suits long, slender fingers or more elongated which compliments shorter, thicker fingers. DO wear a mar quise, oval, emerald cut or pear-shaped dia mond set parallel (ver tically) on your finger if you have fingers on the short side. These shapes will help lengthen the look of your hand. DON'T forget to consider which colour of metal setting would best flatter your skin tone. Traditionally (although there are many exceptions), it is thought that blondes suit a warm yellow gold while the cool look of white gold and platinum flatter brunettes. DO keep in mind that even if your fin gers and hands are fair ly short and small, you can still wear many different styles and diamond shapes if you have quite a bit of dis tance between the knuckle on your hand and the first knuckle on your finger (where the ring sits).
