Expires March 20/99 Jaguar expectations high for S-iype sedan meineke Discount Mufflers Jaguar is finally ready to pounce into the high ly lucrative, and highly competitive, mid-luxury car market with the S-Type revealed to the public for the first time at the Birmingham (Eng.) Auto Show last fall. I say 'finally' because this smaller, less-costly Jaguar has been a vehicle the Coventry-based firm has wanted to build for 10 years. For reasons beyond its control, the ability to do so was fis cally and materialistically beyond their grasp. It was 10 years ago, when the con cept of this car was first being mooted, that Ford stepped in with £2 billion and bought Jaguar, a legendaiy car maker then teetering on collapse. There is no question about it. If Ford had not been there then, Jaguar would not be with us today. The first thing was to spend money to bring its existing plant at Brown's Lane up to world class manufacturing standards. The next step was to end the slap-dash build qual ity that was resulting in magnificent-looking cars that wouldn't start or run. It was the abysmal quality control that allowed BMW and Mercedes-Benz to pull up and then rocket by Jaguar in the minds of premium car buy ers. Today, Jaguar's XJ sedans and XK sports cars are virtually problem free. With its core now healthy and secured, the S- Type (or X200 as it is known in-house) has been brought to the forefront, and in dramatic style. The S-Type is a name Jaguar used for a series of highly-successful mid-sized sedans it sold in the 1970s and into the 1980s. Smaller and more agile than the big Series I through HI Series, they did not scrimp on all the things that made a Jaguar a Jaguar. Today, a good Marie U S (as it was called) is worth many times what it sold for new and is jealously protected by those who own them. With the exception of a V8 engine used the XK-8 sportscar, everything else about the S-type is new including where it will be built. Because Jaguar expects this S-Type sedans to double the number of cars it builds (about 60,000 per year), Jaguar again dug deep into Ford's pockets to build a car factory in Castle Bromwich, near Birmingham. The plant had last produced Spitfire fighter aircraft in 1946 and had since sat vacant. Cars should start hitting Canadian show rooms in the next quarter. It is an accepted fact that luxury car buyers on the whole tend to go for front engine and rear drive and Jaguar has done this, never contemplating a front-drive in this segment. It will have a five-speed automatic transmis sion with Jaguar's signature J-gate shift pattern. The car will be offered with two engines: the AJ- V6 a quad-cam, 24 valve V6 producing 240 hp and 221 lh/ft of torque; and the AJ-V8, a quad-cam 32-valve V8 producing 281 hp and 287 lb/ft of torque. As one would expect, premium leathers, woods, and cloth are used throughout. Pricing is said to be "competitive", meaning the V6 will be competitive with the BMW 528i with the V8 S- type up against the BMW 540i. These two cars were not chosen at random. The S-Type equates to these two cars in size and per formance while, hopefully, being seen as being more luxurious, in other words, a sporting sedan with what chief stylist Geoff Lawson called "Jaguamess." And while the S-type may be inspired by histo ry, its functions will be state-of-the-art. The S-Type will be the first car in the world to offer the ability to operate the primary climate con trol functions, the audio system and the telephone by voice command. By pressing a button on the left side of the steering wheel, a microphone on the steering col umn picks up voice commands. It is programmed to accept 48 commands. It has the ability to distin guish both English and North American dialects. There is a voice recognition module for England and another for North America The unit responds to commands in a male voice, because a female voice is used in the optional satellite navigation system. The nav-system is not immediately planned for Canada as much of this country has not been digitally mapped by satellite yet. The nav-system is integrated with a Jaguar Assist, an emergency messaging system that provides auto mated response when an air bag is activated. Another thing I noticed at the launch of this car was the mood of the people at Jaguar. They have been from near collapse in 1988, then through a physical and spiritual re-building process thanks to Ford, and now they are itching for a tussle with their German arch rivals in the luxury car stratos phere. C O P Y R I G H T W H E E L B A S E C O M M U N I C A T I O N S Don't forget to wax Generally, it's a good idea to Wax your car a couple of times a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. And if you'll be driving on salt-covered roads or parking outside instead of in a garage this winter, you should probably be wax ing twice as often. Under normal circumstances, the finish on your car takes more abuse than any other part of the car, including the engine, brakes, shocks, tires and transmission. That's because your vehicle is continually exposed to damage from the environ ment such as salt, sun, dust, rain and airborne pollutants. The damage begun outside continues even when your car is parked in a garage, eating away at wax and harming the finish. Protecting the finish is important because it protects the steel skin beneath from rust and corrosion. The way your car looks affects its resale value and even the way you feel behind the wheel, according to the automotive experts. For a gleaming finish, start with a good wash job. Regular washings help keep salts, acids, and other impurities from attacking the wax and paint The time and money invested in keeping your car looking good are well spent. Your car will look its best and it'll be worth more, too. Taurus SE/Sable IS Standard Features: • 3.0 litre V6 • Automatic • Power Group • Mr • Remote Keyless Entry & More!
