"It's just a better environment; it feels very warm and family-oriented when you're in there and that's what we remember about growing up in Brooklin." Luna Dance Company opened this past summer at 9465 Baldwin St. in Myrtle Station, located north of Brooklin along Hwy. 12. The former church building now contains two renovated studios, as well as a waiting area, change rooms, office, and kitchen. The sisters offer classes in ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, acro, and hip hop for dancers of all levels from ages 2-18. Before they could take over the space, Ms. McPherson said some renovation work was required to meet their needs. "For example the floors upstairs were slanted so that you could see over the pews of the church and we couldn't have that for the dance studio so (the owners) built a new floor upstairs to even it out," she said. Preserving the historic charm of the building, she added, was important during that process. "We kept a lot of the interesting character to the building so it still feels like a church," Ms. McPherson said. "It still has the stained glass windows, the organ is still in there just because we liked the look of it ... we have a few of the pews still left that we're using as seating and all the original doors and the building itself is all pretty much the same." The owner of the building, Jackie Porco, also put together a scrapbook of old photos and newspaper clippings from the church's more than 100-year history. "The scrapbook sits there so sometimes the students will look through it and ask us questions, which adds to their experience at the studio," said Ms. McPherson. The natural health store at 5969 Baldwin St. S. offers a wide variety of gluten-free, low-carb food, as well as a full range of natural health supplements. Owner and Brooklin resident Mike Kouadio said he's thrilled to be able to offer health-conscious residents of the community greater access to the products they need to improve their lives. "We've already had visitors come in delighted to see we have set up shop, thanking us for eliminating the need to drive far for their natural health needs," he said. "We curate inventory based on the needs of the community and will continue to adapt product offerings to best serve our shoppers' health concerns." Nutrition House was founded in 1979 as a family business and currently operates more than 65 retail stores across Canada and the United States. Store operators and sales associates are educated through the Nutrition House training program, developed by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, to ensure customers' health- related questions can be answered each time they visit one of the stores. "In an increasingly competitive market, franchisees can lean on the wealth of experience we provide as a family owned and operated franchisor for over 35 years," said Wayne Parent, president of Nutrition House. "We have built world-class operations and support networks in a high-growth industry that will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. We are thrilled to welcome Mike and his team to our family. "We will keep working hard to give Canadians access to high-quality education and natural health solutions in all of our stores." The natural health products industry is one of Canada's fastest-growing industries, with annual sales of nearly $4 billion, according to the company's website. Seventy-five per cent of Canadians use or have used a natural health prod- uct, the site says. Visit: www.nutritionhouse.com
