Dear Editor:
When I received Nov. 23, 1944, Warder and noticed a couple of protests against the bad attitude towards the zombies by M. E. Palmateer, I just couldn't resist the temptation to answer.
Please, M. E. Palmateer, answer one question: Why does the zombie not volunteer to fight for Canada? Why should he stay behind his mother's skirts and ask for protection? If you could only see the numbers of men who every day die and shed blood just over the one purpose. A couple of men fighting it out with Jerry when there should be eight or nine.
I myself have or will have two years in Italy by next July. That, M. E. Palmateer, is a very long time to spend in a country where they can't even speak your language, let alone all the other countless troubles we put up with.
What would happen if the Canadian army here in Italy, and also in France were to all go A.W.O.L. If we told them we didn't like slit trenches, shells and other things not meant for the human race. I imagine you and the zombies would be the first ones to say they were yellow.
One day we get something to eat, the next day you can't even look at it, but we eat it just the same.
Yes, we are trying to get by and get the war over, but it won't be over so soon if we have our own people scrapping over their little son who might get hurt, or maybe wants to get his pockets full. I'm sure I can't figure it out. But there is one little word that goes around a lot over here; it's a very colorful word, too (yellow).B-8366 G. E. Brown,

- This card is part of a larger collection of World War II personnel clippings. The project began in 1944 at the Lindsay Library. The intent was to gather together as much information as possible on the military record and the service of people from the Town of Lindsay and the County of Victoria (now Kawartha Lakes) who served in the war. To that end, during the years 1944, 1945, and 1946, members of the public donated photographs and updated information about their loved ones. Both library staff and the public saved and donated newspaper clippings. Some of the files contain great amounts of detail, while others have just a name.
