June 12,1974 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 9 Police warn against phony bank inspector Senior citizens in A Oakvil le are being ^ warned about a man posing as a bank inspector who defrauded an 80-year-old William St. woman of $1,500 in savings. According to Halton R e g i o n a l P o l i c e Sergeant s , E d wa r d W aller and Ronald Sullivan, the woman received a phone call May 17, from a man who said he was a bank official. The caller said $1,500 had been taken out of her account and placed in the bank's vault and bank money was now in her account. * The woman was asked to withdraw the cash from the bank and walk to a phone booth close by. The bank was trying to catch " the culprits" explained the caller, and asked the woman what she would be wearing when she made the transaction. The victim told police she withdrew the money, walked to the phone booth and had just stepped in when the phone rang. The man then told her to leave the money in the booth and go home. When she arrived, the man phoned again telling her "You've just been wonderful. We have an idea as to who the culprits are and this will help hold them." He said he would call her in about a week and replace the money. When she was not contacted, the woman told her brother about the incident and he notified police. Sergeant Waller said so far this is an isolated case and that he had never seen this system used before. Usually some contact is made between the elderly erson and the so-called ank official. Relatives and friends should warn older people about the scheme, he said, and if a phone call is received the bank or p o l i c e s h o u l d be contacted immediately. W here can regional councillors go? BURLINGTON - A move within Halton regional council which would have "stopped anyone f rom going anywhere was itself stopped. The motion, presented by Burlington Councillor D a v i d Coons and Burlington Mayor George Harrington, stated that "no members of staff of the region be permitted to attend any conferences beyond a radius of 40 miles." However, because of the controversial report on the series of staff errors that led to the lapsing of five regional works projects, Mayor Harrington amended that motion by removing the 40-mile stipulation. And after the comment that Mayor Harrington and Oakville Mayor see a photo you like? call the Oakville Beaver 845-3824 Harry Barrett had just returned from a two-day tour of the Calgary police department , another a m e n d m e n t was introduced stating that no councillor could attend conferences "outside a radius, not diameter, over 300 feet from the regional headquarters." "That means nobody will be going anywhere," said the Burlington mayor. The motion and both a m e n d m e n t s w e r e defeated. 1 imHimmmiiiiiiiHiuHHiHiiHiNNiNHaiUHniiiHHHiiaiiii PERMA CLEAN CENTRE COIN-OPERATED LAUNDROMAT | BULK PKY CLEANING 8 lb s . f o r » 3 .Q o | DRAPES • BLANKETS • SLEEPIN6 BADS ATTENDANT IN CHARGE • HOURS: Mon. - Fri. • 8:30 a.ia. to 9 pjn. ■ Sot. 8:30 o.m. - 6 p.m. 845-0121 Tt Reynolds St. Corner of Robinson 4 in u m im i n n i i n m n i m 8 H m n n m i i i t m m n im i , I M im i | | m ; i TOP DRIVEWAY SE ASPHALT BASE :EUEbeNTPOJR REVETEMEHT 'TION-ATTENTI flammable- imtui h a s . m o r e everything you need to make it on your own. i Sakrete Concrete Mix Portland cement, washed sand, gravel (sized, washed, graded) For footings walks, posts, etc Aspenite sheathing Economical wood-chip panelling that's great for fencing, garages any place where warp and weather-resistant wood will be needed for the job Beaver Asphalt Base Drivew ay S ealer Liquid sealer for old or new asphalt drives.
