Oakville Beaver W eekend Sunday, May 16, 1999 Parents feel trustees ignored demands for new schools inquiries and been told there is no additional money for NSH is available by calling Collins at 257-8787. Daylight burglary warning Halton Regional Police have issued a warning about a series of daylight robberies at Oakville and Burlington residences, some of which occurred while the occupants were home. Some of these have happened when homeowners were in their backyards or gardens and unfortunately left their doors or windows unlocked. When the suspects have been confronted during these day light house entries, they say they are looking for a house to rent or use some other excuse. Cash, purses and jewelry have all been lost during the successful thefts. Police advise that doors and windows should be locked even if you are just out in your yard or garden. Keep garage doors and sheds locked to prevent bicycles, power tools, golf equipment and other items from being stolen. Do not leave wallets, purses, keys, laptops, briefcases etc. in plain view in your home. If you witness suspicious activity or persons in your neigh bourhood, immediately contact police at 878-5511. If you pos sess information to help this ongoing investigation, call Det. Const. Kevin Maher at 825-4747 ext. 2271. For more information about crime prevention measures for your home, contact Const. Gregg Davidson, Community Support Officer, at 825-4747 ext. 2222. But without the closures and subsequent provincial funding, she pre dicted new elementary schools are at least four years away. "Our children will be in portables for years to come," said Pakkala. "I'm stunned any responsible group of peo ple would keep a school going at 28% capacity, while other schools are running at 128%." She said the board must consider the issue on a Halton-wide basis. Pakkala criticized the board for not paying enough attention to parents' argu ments for new schools. "We're going to start lob bying the provincial govern ment," she said. "I hope we can work with the board, but this is doubtful." In addition to presenting its petition, the NSH invited trustees to an information meeting in Oakville today (Sunday) from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Parents will meet at Site 09, comer of River Glen Boulevard and Harmon Gate, planned site of a new elemen tary school in River Oaks. "Parents want to know why no new schools are being built by 2000," said Jeff Collins, another member of the new group. "We want to bring parents together because they want to hear when a new school will be built in River Oaks." He said accommodation in schools is reaching new crisis levels in River Oaks and Georgetown. "In River Oaks, we have more kindergarten students than some areas have in stu dents," said Collins. "Families in our area are going to private or Catholic schools or they're moving out." He blamed the provincial government for failing to deal with school accommodation problems. Collins said he has made new elementary schools in the provincial budget. He said budget education funding is mainly earmarked for universities and colleges and for health and safety at school boards. Oakville trustee Peter Petrusich said he totally endorsed Pakkala's comments and asked how he could join the group. More information about
