This three-day celebration, called Hilaria, started on the Ides of March. • Early Christiandom celebrated Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday in Lent, worshipping Mary, Mother of Christ. • In England, Mid-Lent Sunday evolved into Mothering Sunday. As part of an early custom, young men and women, who were employed as servants, gave their mothers special treats called "mothering cakes." • Julie Ward Howe made the first-known suggestion for a Mother's Day in the United States, 1872. She suggested June 2nd be observed as a day dedicated to peace. • In 1907, on the second anniversary of her mother's death, West Virginian Anna Jarvis launched a campaign to establish a nationwide day commemorating mothers. The Foundation is committed to donating $1-million over the next three years. Based on a three-year cycle of focal programs beginning this year with women's shelters, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation will raise funds, work to increase public awareness of the issues creating the need for shelters for abused women, and assist in the educational process of prevention of violence. "Royal LePage has always sought ways to enhance and strengthen our involvement in the communities we work and live in. After extensive con­ sultation with the Royal LePage team coast-to-coast who expressed over­ whelming support for shelters, we rec­ ognized that a focused approach to this charitable program would generate out­ standing results," said Simon P.
