But such properties also have unique problems tha t you should know about before buying. Mould and term ite damage While all homes are susceptible to these threats, older homes are often at a much higher risk than others, as they are more often made of materials attractive to these organisms. If you see extensive term ite droppings near structural elements or tha t mould covers more than 10 square feet of the house, you may want to look elsewhere for a home. Hazardous materials If the house you're looking at was built before 1980, be sure to have the inspector check for lead pipes and asbestos. Lead pipes and asbestos were widely used in homes before their toxic effects on humans were recognized. Dubious numbers Be sure to check the numbers before buying an old house. Figure out what the house would cost on the market if it was fully repaired. If the difference between tha t number and what you're planning to pay for it is less than the cost of repairs, don't buy the house.
