This living room by T o r o n t o d e s i g n e r W i l l i a m Ryan reflects the natural tones that are p opu lar this year If it's a fresh look you're after when painting your home this spring or summer, you might want to return to nature. According to the Color Marketing Group, the international colour forecaster, natural hues contin ue to dominate in 1999, building on last year's colour scheme and adding special metallic finishes. "People are moving away from man-made colours to the yellows, blues, browns and greens that remind them of the outdoors," notes Kevin Skelly, a m em ber o f the Color Marketing Group and marketing ser vices manager at PARA Paints, a lead ing Canadian paint and coatings man ufacturer. "Inspired by natural sur- Natural colours dominate decor for 1999 roundings, 1999 colours are intended to be comforting and clean." Yellow tones are stronger and rich er in 1999 while blues are increasing in popularity because of their connec tion to water. Green remains a key colour due to its strong environmental tie and brown is also gaining appeal, intended to be used in a comforting, rather than overpowering, way. "Any o f these choices can be lay ered with metallic paints to create a shimmering effect on walls or sur faces," adds Skelly, noting that faux finishing techniques to add depth, or a pearl-like look, are also fashionable this year. To help choose your new colours, PARA offers the following tips: • Ensure continuity. When one room in your home is visible from another, you can create a harmonious effect by repeating key colours. For example, you may start with a basic colour in the hallway and then repeat it as an accent colour in adjacent rooms. But then, they didn't have to put up with the messy rollers and paint trays that we do! However, here's a neat tip I heard of that should make your cleanup a lot easier. Before you start, place your roller tray inside a plastic shopping bag. This will act as a tray liner. Now, you can pour your paint into the tray and complete your masterpiece. W hen it comes time for cleanup, simply slip the tray out and throw away the invert ed, messy plastic bag. Presto...a per fectly pristine paint tray! W ant another handy • plastic bag trick? Good! Just slip the brush into a plastic sandwich bag, seal it and pop it in your freezer. W hen you're ready to start painting again, remove your paintbrush popsicle and within minutes, you're on your way! And in closing, I 'd like to talk about that final cleanup, the one we all like to avoid. Especially, cleaning rollers. How many times have you just tossed that used roller away, rather than get ting down and dirty with the paint sol vents. Well, here's a handy hint I heard about. You know those long containers you buy tennis-balls in. Well, ju st pop your used roller into one o f those, fill the container with solvent, enough to cover the roller, close the lid tightly and give it a good cocktail shake. Let it set for a couple o f hours, give it a last shake and it should be ready for the final soap and water treatment! Locations to serve better • Open 7 Days a Week Sandy soil & tulips don't get alon The tulips dominate the front garden. The variety is 'Canadian Centennial ' which is red, similar to 'O xford.' These were planted in the fall of 1966, about 12 inches deep in sandy soil. This reduced their tendency to produce side bulblets and, over the years, smaller flowers and finally fade away. There are now several hundred com bined with a few hundred yellow Darwins. The blue grape hyacinths are in flower and provide some contrast. The forsythia are fading fast, but the m ahonias are replacing the yellow and the bridal wreath spirea provides a white blanket.
