D8 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 19, 1999 An O akville B eaver A dvertising F eature To advertise in this section call 845-3824 By Malcolm Gunn SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER N issan's new-for-1999 Quest has kept its hybrid heritage and slippery shape, but virtually every other aspect of this minivan has been changed, altered and generally improved. If you're a little fuzzy on just what a Nissan Quest is, a quick refresher is in order. In the fall of 1992, both Nissan and Ford's Mercury division teamed up to put a minivan into production. Nissan, which devel oped the overall design, called its version the Quest, while Mercury handled the production end and badged its version as the Villager. While league-leading Chrysler seemed to vacuum nearly every prospective minivan buyer into its dealerships, both the Quest and Villager still managed to chum out respectable copies of their slick lit tle breadbox. Now, Nissan and Mercury have once more renewed their partner ship vows, and released a second- generation Quest/Villager for 1999. (At this time, Ford has no plans to bring the U.S.-built Villager -- as i has before -- into Canada). , The Quest still looks like a Quest on the outside, including its narrow, shark-like grille opening and steeply raked hood. But there's a softer, rounder sculpting around the doors and side glass that gives the minivan a more sophisticated appearance than before. The Quest comes in three fla vors; base GXE; sporty SE and full-dress GLE. All versions come with both driver- and passenger- side sliding side doors. Compared to last year, overall length has grown 11.7 centimetres and width by 3.0 cm. This places the Quest somewhere between a regular-, and extended-length Dodge or Plymouth minivan. The Quest's growth spurt has had a positive impact on interior dimensions. There's now about seven per cent more usable cargo volume -- room for a couple more bags of groceries or an extra suit case. There's growth under the hood, tool. Last year's 3.0-litre 151- horsepower engine has been replaced by an all-new 3.3-litre SOHC unit that produces 170 horsepower. A four-speed automat ic transmission completes the power package. As with most minivans, the Quest offers a choice of seating arrangements for up to seven peo ple, depending on the model. The GXE comes with a second-row bench seat, while the SE and GLE get two bucket seats in the middle.. To max out on cargo space, the sec ond-row seats can be removed, while the third-row bench can be moved forward and folded flat against the front seats. Nissan has equipped even the most basic Quest models with the sort of luxury and convenience equipment that would cost extra in most other minivans. For starters, the GXE includes air conditioning, power front win dows and door locks, cruise con trol, remote keyless entry, security system, luggage rack, AM/FM/cas- sette audio system and ABS. Move up to the mid-grade SE and you're now entitled to front and rear air conditioning, perfor mance-rated tires mounted on 16- inch allow wheels, a sport-tuned suspension including springs, shocks and stabilizer bar, and ultra cool black-on-white instruments. Saddle up the luxury GLE and the list of goodies grows to include leather seats, six-way driver's seat, four-way power passenger seat, cli mate control with front and rear controls, six-disc in-dash CD changer, rear audio controls and garage door opener. Other options, like a sunroof, rear parcel shelf, seven-speaker sound system and a towing pack age can be added to most models. For 1999, Nissan takes a solid minivan and makes it roomier, more powerful and a better bang for the buck. It's all a part of the 'Quest' for success. REAL SERVICE FROM REAL PEOPLE.
