Luckily, you don't have to be an expert to produce attractive-looking beds. Nowadays, there are many products on the market that make it easy even for novices to create nice, clean landscape areas. If you're planning on doing some gardening this long weekend, the best way to keep beds looking great is by keep ing the weeds out. An easy and cost-effective way to do this is by using a landscape fabric. With a fabric, you can stop weed growth without having to use chemicals. 24 things to do (Continued from page C2) 23. At the same time, the fabrics allow the free flow of air, water and nutrients to the soil. Made of green UV-treated polyethylene, the fabric encourages root growth by keeping the soil moist and cool. If the fabric is protect ed by bark, mulch or stone, it can last indefi nitely. Prior to using a landscape fabric, eliminate weeds and grasses from the planting area and rake it smooth. Simply spread the fabric over the plants, cut holes to the size needed and pull the fabric down around the plants. Then spread mulch, bark or stone over the fabric. The fabric even has embossed markings to help space new plantings evenly. Once you've cleaned out your landscape bed and put down your landscape fabric, it's time to add a finishing touch. A great way to do that is by using edging. There are a variety of edging products available. All you have to do is hammer the edging into the ground with a rubber mallet. This edging prevents creeping grasses from growing in beds and provides a finishing touch by keeping landscaped areas neat and trim. The plastic green edging is durable, yet flexible enough to create curves and tree rings. Best of all, it won't rust, rot, crack, chip or fade. The edging is available in lightweight, easy-to-handle sections that are 4 feet long and 5 inches high. The sections connect securely together to form a continuous border. Like the weed-control fabric, the edging is easy to use. Simply lay a garden hose in the desired edging position and drive the edging into the ground by striking the scalloped top with a rubber mallet. To ensure solid placement and to maintain a barrier above the surface, be sure to drive the edging 3 to 4 inches into the ground. Getting your landscape beds to look good is a snap with today's easy-to-use prod ucts. Just visit your local garden centre and they will be able to help you find something to make gardening simple yet look like it was done by a pro.
