Kathy Douthart: lost son to brain tumour in August 1997 and now wants to raise funds for childhood brain tumour research Photo by Ron Kuzyk Lost son to brain tumour, Kathy Douthart to take 2,800 foot Leap of Hope to raise research m oney By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR At the end of June, Kathy Douthart will para chute from a height of 2,800 feet to raise money for paediatric brain tumour research. She's calling her jump 'A Leap of Hope.' "I've always wanted to try this for as along as I can remember," says Douthart, recently honoured as one of Halton's four Women of the Year. "And, my husband Dan surprised me in February for my birthday and paid for the lesson and jump. "Rather than just jumping for my own enjoy ment, I decided to turn it into something positive." Douthart has decided to turn the jump into a t fundraiser for Brainchild and is actively collecting pledges. She got involved in Brainchild following the death of her son Christopher, 7, from brain tumour disease in August 1997. "We got involved because of what we went through with Christopher." Douthart adds her hus band is the 'silent supporter,' preferring to work in the background. Brainchild, the Brain Tumour Research Assistance and Information Network, was estab lished about six years ago. Earlier this year, thanks to a $5 million grant, the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre was opened at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. "There has always been a brain tumour research lab at the Hospital for Sick Children, but now we have a major centre where research is being done in brain tumour disease in both children and adults. There's a collection of doctors working there, all of them battling the same disease." Abut 60 to 100 new cases of brain tumour dis ease are diagnosed annually at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and that is expected to increase by 30%, says Douthart. Douthart believes it's important for people to know the symptoms. They are any one of, or a combination of: • headache • early morning nausea A8 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A MISSISSAUGA City of Mississauga Leading today 300 City Centre Drive for tomorrow 896.5000 m 896.5151 www.city.mississauga.on.ca Wednesday May 19,1999 • seizures • weakness or paralysis in any part of the body • dizziness • unsteadiness • personality changes • visual disturbances • double vision, and • hearing disturbances All proceeds from Douthart's jump will go to this new Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre. Douthart will jump on June 27th. She will make the jump at 6 p.m., after a nine-hour lesson that day in Arthur, Ont., at the Parachute School of Toronto. "I'm not afraid," she admits. "After everything I've gone through watching Christopher fight for his life, this jump is not that big a deal for me. "This is nothing more scary than hearing your child diagnosed with cancer, watching him endure the treatments, and watching your child die." "I feel I've been touched by an angel, and I've learned to be brave from him." Douthart has already raised $34,000 from a Rigatoni Research Dinner and Silent Auction held last year at Le Dome Banquet Hall. "The commu nity was outstanding. And Angelo Rizzuti donated everything that night. His generosity added to the success of the dinner." All of the money raised from that dinnef went to the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre. The second annual Rigatoni Research Dinner will be held Sept. 28th at Le Dome. Crime Stoppers wants to know who they are. A recent bur glary at Moen Inc. is an example of the smash-and- grab style of entry being employed. During the Friday night of May 7th and Sat., May 8th, a large window was smashed at this facility on Bristol Circle West. Once inside, the suspect quickly scooped up a laptop com puter and ran from the building. C o m p u t e r s have been popular items for thieves to steal for some time, and laptops have increasingly become a pre ferred type. I n v e s t i g a t o r s encourage every one to utilize security measures that will make it more difficult to steal the comput ers initially and help recover them if stolen. If you have any information that leads to an arrest in this or any other case, you may be eligi ble for a cash reward. You need not give your name. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to Call Display. Please call 1- 800-222-TIPS or 825-TIPS (that's 825-8477). v # D a v i d I o o f. A u th o r o f B o o m . B u s t.
