Very few big-ticket energy-using items are considered good investments. For example, you can buy the most fuel- efficient car on the market. but it will still depreciate in value significantly the moment you drive it off the dealer's lot. However, you can purchase security against the rising price of energy by buy- ing an R-2000 home, because it offers dramatic savings in heating costs. "lt's a Canadian home built for Canadians. Anyone in New Brunswick who is not building R-2000 houses is making a mistake," says George Dashner of New Brunswick Power. "There is more to buying a house than just price. The "R" in R-2000 stands for resis- tance to heat loss. And the "2000" means that the technology is expected to be at the leading edge of energy-efficient building practices to the year 2000 and beyond. tures a a mechanical ventilation system that keeps fresh air flowing throughout the house; AnR areful sealing against air leakage 000 home has these key fea with a continuous air vapour barrier; ct high levels of insulation to reduce heat loss, maintain more even indoor air temperature and help to cut down on out- side noise; a efficient heating and domestic hot water systems; and . Cl includes passive solar energy gains in the house design. R-2000 homes are built to exacting technical requirements that go beyond those set out in current Canadian building codes and they are tested during con- struction for their energy performance. Over the last 10 years, the energy effi- ciency levels in all new homes built in Canada have increased by 50% or better and a lot of the credit for that goes to the R-2000 program. It has raised awareness of being environmentally-responsible by using less energy in the heating and cool- in of homes "Gas and electrical utilities, provincial agencies. banks and financial institutions are very keenly supporting the R-2000 Home Program." says Cole. The Bank of Montreal in New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia offers a one-quarter per cent reduction in mortgage rates for an R-2000 home. Tom Alton, President of the Mortgage Corporation of the Bank of Montreal says, "We're involved in the R-2000 pro- gram because we like the concept of energy-efficient homes, especially the air quality. We wanted to encourage the development of the R-2000 program because in the long run, that's the way to Ontario Hydro offers a $4,000 grant for any R-2000 house heated by electrici- ty built in a non-gas area - $2,000 goes to the builder and $2,000 goes to the homeowner. 20 New Brunswick Power offers a total incentive of $2,000, $1,000 to the R-2000 home buyer and $1,000 to the New Brunswick Home Builders' Association to administer the R-2000 program. "We believe that we have the best R- 2000 program in Canada in New Brunswick. More than 8% of all our housing starts in 1991 were R-2000. If you’re building new, build R-2000," George Dashner suggests. Remember, any style of house can be constructed to R-2000 standards, and there are currently more than 4,000 trained R-2000 builders across Canada.
