Living healthier and longer lives The vast majority of older adults are healthy and live independently at home. Among this group of older adults, an increasingly positive interest in health and behaviour that promotes good health is emerging. Studies by gerontologists, sociologists and economists have discovered that older adults are adamant about living independently, being responsible for their health, managing their own financial affairs, sharing their wisdom and life experiences and being part of the decision-making processes that dictate lifestyle. Above all, older adults wish to be treat ed with respect and dignity. Active living in the later years is a prerequisite for meet ing all of these goals. With our success in improving human survival comes the challenge of ensuring that aging people have the opportunity to continue to live well. To do this we must overcome nega tive stereotypes and myths that mislead older adults into believing that aging and inactivity are synonymous. As the number of older Canadians continues to rise, so will the stress on social and medical support systems. Older adults themselves will need to understand and engage in self- help activities such as incorporating regular physical activity into their way of life. One prominent researcher has suggest ed that vigorous physical activity can improve the functional age of the average older adult by the equivalent of at least eight years. P o te n tia l R o le s A n d O p p o r tu n itie s To enable older adults to move toward healthy, active liv ing, older individuals must be willing to accept responsibili ty for initiating and maintaining healthy lifestyles throughout the entire course of life. In order for this goal to be achieved, a supportive environment is essential at the individual, com munity, institutional and social policy levels. Older adults need to advocate for this type of support, exercise their rights and actively participate in planning and decision-making processes. Older adults can contribute to children's understanding of aging by participating in school activities and programmes. As positive role models for their peers, active older adults will dispel negative stereotypes. They will encourage others to lead physically active lifestyles and ultimately will make a significant contribution toward achieving a happy, healthier lifestyle for us all.
